Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Rieussec 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Dried pineapple, orange marmalade, honeysuckle on the nose. A good amount of botrytis, quite sweet but balanced by nice acidity; fairly light (especially compared to the 2003 Suduiraut alongside it). Very very good.

  • 2003 Château Suduiraut 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

So much richer than the 2003 Rieussec. Initially restrained on the nose, but opulent, rich, and very fun to drink. Not at all restrained. The Rieussec is a wine to sit and contemplate and the Suduiraut is a wine to gulp.

  • 2003 Clos Fourtet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A very pronounced and lovely nose of red fruit, lots of green, and a bit of animal/barn. The palate was initially a bit sharp, with a bit of bitterness, but this mellowed and softened with time. Light-medium body. Fairly short finish. Overall, the palate was just okay on open, evolving to good, but the nose is fantastic. The more I sat with it, the less I liked it, as it went from my WOTN down to 3rd. Group's #3 of the reds.

  • 2003 Château Pipeau 82 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Low-intensity nose that showed very little of anything. On the palate, mostly hollow, acidic, with very little interest. Eh.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very enjoyable. Beautiful, medium-intensity nose that was simultaneously earthy and very clean, delineated fruit. Cherry candy on the palate. Silky body, with fading tannin but good acidity. Very very good. Group's #1.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

On the palate, sweet Jolly Ranchers, but surprisingly, not in a bad way. Dark, brooding red fruit and spicy sweetness. Pretty. Clear #4 for me, and overall group's #4, though some had it as high as 2nd.
