Introduction

Dave & Caroline hosted their blind tasting dinner this year at the thier club. Lovely setting, private room and attentive service. Only drawbacks were high noise level from awful acoustics and having to contort your legs to negotiate the table's legs. There were 11 of us.

Flight 1 - Sparkler with hors d'oeuvres (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Solo intermezzo (1 Note)

Surprise of the night due to obscurity and performance. Would have been better with food.

Flight 3 - Whites with fish (3 Notes)

Pave of Sole with Caviar Beurre Blanc and Cauliflower Puree. Mediocre dish and the cauliflower may have undermined the wines. A good flight showing contrasting Chardonnay styles with the Aussie faring poorly.

  • 2010 Flametree Chardonnay

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Lacked body, flavor and character. A hollow mid palate suggested maybe an off bottle but others wondered if pairing within the flight caused this too appear weak.

  • 2009 Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

The flat, acid-deprived finish and size revealed this as Californian. Lovely fruit and impressive body. Drinkable but not preferable.

  • 2011 Kumeu River Chardonnay Hunting Hill

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

Much to like here and had me thinking Côte de Beaune of its subtle precision and that non-effervescent sparkle that Chardinnay from Burgundy can offer. My impression demurred with the emergence of a sour note on the finish that some speculated was the result of the beurre blanc.

Flight 4 - First red trio (3 Notes)

Grilled Australian Lamb Chop with Truffled White Grits and Port Reduction. Very good lamb. I was thinking Cabernet Franc. Despite the single producer of the same wine, it was very difficult to recognize it. A less brett-dominated '98 might have tied them together better. The uncommoness of '95 & '98 didn't help.

Flight 5 - Another round of reds (3 Notes)

Kona Coffee Crusted Filet Mignon with Horseraddish Whipped Potato and Glazed Shallot. A nice dish wherein a well cooked filet helped overcome this usually blah cut. In this course and the prior, a green or orange vegetable would have helped frame the wines. The atypicality of the Clerico's made it difficult to figure out the theme.

Flight 6 - Dessert (1 Note)

Chocolate Pot Du Creme, Chantilly Cream & Toasted Pistachio. An awful dish and a wine before its time. Fine because I'd had enough to eat and drink.

Closing

Lovely evening with some very good food and wine.
