Introduction

Great introduction to these two vintages with contrasting styles. Great education from the producers and Spiaggia's Rachael Lowe.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2011 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Sit down tasting. Red cherry and berry aromas with some faint floral, earth notes. Dried red berry flavors also with some earth. Good minerally textures, tart acidity, then firm tannins on finish. Needs time.

  • 2011 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Sit down tasting. Subtlety floral start with red berry aromas. Red berry and savory spice flavors. Probably the most elegant of the 2011s in the sit-down tasting, but also slightly short. Nicely balanced for medium term enjoyment.

All the property can produce Brunello, with largest clusters going into the Rosso, smallest clusters into Riserva when produced.

  • 2011 La Magia Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Sit down tasting. Spice driven start shows its French oak. Red cherry on nose and palate. Modern styled makes in an easy, accessible wine that is easy to enjoy young, even if slightly simple.

  • 2010 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Sit down tasting. Red cherry throughout and faint black cherry hints. Dense and concentrated with ripe fruit. Lots of structure but enough of everything that it's already seemingly harmonious and hinting at its great long-term potential. Complexity and minerally textures really emerge on finish. Impressive.

  • 2010 Pinino Brunello di Montalcino Pinone Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Sit down tasting. Entirely fruit driven start with a lush, almost jammy nature that didn't seem very Brunello at the beginning. Textures and structure really emerge from the middle forward evolving this into a classic charming wine, more prototypical and seemingly cellarworthy.
