Stems from 30% whole bunch fermentation, ash, and earth. Palate is in a bright style, with some savoury notes and mild stems in the background that give it an extra element. I think this will be an earlier drinking wine but I liked its character now.

Purple tinged. Headily aromatic, raspberry, intense cherry, spice, plum, blueberry and a light earthy savoury streak. The palate shows off lovely sweet fruit but wraps it in a delicate package. Long and very fine, this is totally seamless at this stage in its life. Excellent stuff.

Meaty, ash, spice, graphite and some new barrel toast. Brighter flavours drive the palate, the fruit is vibrant and the acidity lifts it up even more. Nice length and I think it will calm down with a little time in bottle and be really stylish.

Previously labelled as Vat 5. Stem, floral perfume, leather at the fore and blackberry. Acid levels are high, there is good red fruit to counter. Medium depth and fine tannin. Good wine but doesn't stand out next to the previous two.

Violet, blackcurrant and pepper on the nose. Very full and sweet palate, though it has that pepper element throughout. Good acid core that stops the fruit from being too overwhelmingly sweet.

Blueberry, chocolate, spice and dust. Well balanced on the palate, a step up on the Stevens next to it. Does hint at power but it is held together by really good structure backing it all up. Really like the length.

First release from vines planted in 2002. Raspberry, stem, some lifted florals and a little menthol kick. Tannins are quite prominent and the fruit doesn't really have the depth at the moment to have this feel complete. Still good but shown up by some of the other wines on show.

Meaty, blackcurrant, spice. Full flavoured palate with black and red fruit, delivers with intensity while retaining a sense of poise. Lines of spice and great acid keep it fresh and interesting. Impressive stuff.

3-5% Cabernet. Menthol, cherry and some oak. Medium bodied, the fruit verges toward full but it does have an element of softness that is folded into the overall structure.

Lemon, floral, orange peel and pear on the nose. Pure fruit on the palate with good acidity. Plenty of approachability already but in 5+ years it should show itself in an ever better light.

Toast and lemon, mandarin and a start on some waxy development already. Palate has hints of honey and a good amount of flavour intensity. Starting on the path to developing aged character, and should be a very good wine over the medium term.

Floral, lime and light spice notes. Good acidity, not as full as the Vat 1 but still has character to it. Poised to develop well over the medium term.

Peach, spice and lemon. Younger drinking style with roundness to the fruit on the palate and moderate acidity.

Floral, coconut, apple and lime. Juicy fruit on the palate, there is some good texture to it and nice length. Fairly simple style for now but good to drink.

Honey, lime and light toast. Rounding out slightly on the palate, the acidity still gives it really good cut and drive. In a good spot for thinking about drinking this, though another 5-7 years are likely to see it in an even better spot.

Floral and earth aromas. Rounded mouthfeel but does have freshness to it. Nice length but not complex or deep for the moment.

Lime, lemon and straw. Really well composed on the palate, I love the restraint and purity of the fruit. Carries with long length and plenty of style.

Floral, orange and flint notes. Settling down nicely with the fruit vibrancy still there but with excellent texture and cleansing acidity completing the package. Another 5 years and this should start singing.

Popcorn, lemon, lime and apple. Nicely balanced, good acidity and the fruit is youthful and bright. Will develop well over the next 10 years.

Orange peel, spice and some light nuttiness. Nice toasty element to it. Flows well. Drink now and over the next couple of years.

Flint, lime, floral notes and spice. Good acidity, just barely starting to have some of the acidity round out but there is still a good amount of development remaining.

Floral, orange and a tropical/pineapple fruit element to it. Really lovely balance on the palate, there is complexity and depth to it already. Great length and potential.

Tropical, mango, passionfruit and orange. Decent acidity though some sweetness is more dominant at the moment. Not bad but a little boring.

Peach, lemon, orange and herbal pine. Medium length, palate is clean and has decent length.

Oak and stone fruit with some orange rind. Nice fruit roundness with some decent structure giving it a backbone. Drink over the next 5 years.

Toast and ash with some orange. Quite powerful fruit intensity that keeps up well with the oak. Does keep its freshness across the length thanks to the acidity.

Stem, cherry and ash aromas. Medium bodied, with the fruit almost entirely in the red spectrum. Good drinking wine that will likely do well with a few years more development.

Ash, charcoal, cherry and raspberry. Medium bodied palate with good lift and a good savoury element working well with the red fruit. Has good texture.

Licorice, earth, floral notes, blackberry and meat. Fantastic balance, the fine tannins provide excellent structure with the fruit power restrained and focused around that core. Should shine with enough time.

Raspberry, spice, cherry, red currant and a light stem element. Lovely acidity here, the wine is long, delicate and really well balanced. Fantastic stuff.

Herb, earth, licorice and a really pretty floral element. The earthy and savoury characters persist on the palate along with a fruit that has some punch to it. I really like the style of this and think it should benefit from at least medium term ageing.

Spice, lemon and floral notes. Palate has some roundness and there is a phenolic element to it. Pretty easy to drink already.

Toast, lime, orange peel. Good acid drives the palate along with a little phenolic note. Medium length. Drinking well now to 5 years from now.

Toast, nutty and lemon aromas. Good grip on the palate, there is plenty of spice and it has good length. Should benefit from further ageing.

Lanolin and tamarind. Medium bodied, falls away a little bit in intensity at the end. Drink now.

Lemon, vanilla, pear and grass. Sweet fruited palate, shows a little alcohol though. Good texture and grip.

Fruit, spice and apple. Rounded and sweet fruit. Not bad but not really a style I find much interest in.

Oak, lemon, hay and peaches. Quite rich palate but the fruit sweetness does show good restraint. Good length and once the oak settles on this I think it'll show really well.

Meaty, bretty, violet and leather with some iron. Good red fruit on the palate, plenty of spice and savoury elements. I like the bretty character on this bottle but avoid if you don't like brett.

Blackcurrant, stem and spices. Bright red fruit palate, the fruit sweetness is quite apparent. Doesn't have a great deal of depth to the fruit at this stage.

Pepper, red currant, floral and meat. Bright fruit, has good intensity and length. Young but should settle down and the structure will serve it well in the medium to longer term.

VA, black currant, cassis and meat. Good upfront fruit power, the acid and tannins work well to hold it back. Will age with purpose over the next 10 years.

Meaty, graphite, christmas cake and spice. Good grip and medium weighted savoury fruit. Drink over the next 6-7 years.

Cedar, spice, incense, char and plum. Really well composed palate, the structure is impressive and the fruit power is present but not dominating. Great length. Has spark and drive to it.

Meal, oats, lemon, butter and mild oak aromas. Good power to the palate, the length and texture are both very good - a little more spark and brightness would be appreciated but I still liked it.

2013 Lake's Folly Cabernets 90 Points
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Meaty, undergrowth and rhubarb plus some light floral perfume. The palate is medium weighted and it has good flavour, although the structure seems a little light on. A good medium term wine, more in the pretty and light style than serious.

Chocolate, licorice, cherry and some oak that needs a bit more time to settle. The density of the palate works well with savoury red fruits and fine tannins giving it structure. I like the acidity and persistence even with the fruit power - time shouldn't pose a problem for this wine.
