Blind Wine Tasting

Introduction

The premise was to taste a flight of wines blind, then attempt to match each wine to the provided varietal, region and vintage. The number of attendees dictated we taste only 3 of 6 bottles, which prevented a 'process of elimination' approach from the six listed options.

However, the tasting was still fun and opened the group up to tasting in a somewhat analytical fashion.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine de Terrebrune Bandol Terroir du Trias

    France, Provence, Bandol

This one struggled in the tasting group. Came across as austere and lighter bodied at first, with gamey aromas. Opened up later to more blackberry fruit, but still retained a somewhat bitter, hard finish. Definitely more of a food wine, though great to get into a tasting of this sort.

  • 1999 La Campana Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Seemed to be the consensus favorite of the three bottles, and had the most volume consumed after allowing for re-pours. In great shape, dried cherries abound, lively acidity, well-resolved tannins, medium bodied, lovely finish. No rush to drink, either.

  • 2007 Kent Rasmussen Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Well-liked among the crowd, but necessarily a consensus favorite. Black currant and blackberry, mildly earthy in the background, fruit forward, medium/full bodied. Finish a bit disjointed, might be in a dumb phase, but CA roots showed through nicely. Liked this more a few years ago as it was more silky, classic CA red.

  • 2009 Domaine Equifera Riesling Icewine

Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Short Hills Bench VQA

As usual, the dessert wine was well-received. Dried apricots, honeyed, salted caramel, curiously savory, yet reasonably fresh. Yum.

  • 2008 Viña Santa Rita Carménère Medalla Real Reserva Especial Single Estate

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

Opened for after party. Really liked the typicity, both regional and varietal. The nose was an intriguing mix of tar, tobacco, and cassis. Deft balance that avoided straight up asphalt and green pepper. Full bodied, again striking a balance between ripe dark fruit and earthy characteristics. Soft, extracted tannin, nice finish, alcohol in balance.
