Introduction

We get 10 wines in 10 glasses. All wines of a different varietal or blend and from a different location. We have to tell in approx 1 hour where the wine is produced and of which varietal or traditional blend, the vintage and as many details as we can give. For big ego’s this is the ultimate way to land with both feet on the ground and become humble again ;-) ;-)!

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2011 Jean-Jacques Bereziat Brouilly Domaine de la Roche Saint Martin 83 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly

Transparent purple red. Cherry fruit yoghurt bouquet. On the palate a lot of cherry/candy fruits. A touch of metal. Hardly any tannin. Ok acidity. Light bodied and easy going wine.

  • 2008 Domein Hof te Dieren Regent 78 Points

    Netherlands, Gelderland, Veluwe

Blood red. Dark cherries and some earthy and rustic impressions as well as some metal. Same on the palate. Not much tannin. Some green bell peppers. The acidity is quite dominant and not very pleasant.

  • 2008 Villebois Chinon 84 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Clear blood red. Bouquet with dark fruits, sweet spices and some depth. On the palate a lot of acidity, tart red fruits, bell pepper and a bit earthy. The tannin is a bit sticky in the finish. Ok wine, but nothing special. Will probably improve a bit with some more ageing. Try in 2015.

  • 2009 Weingut Seher Zweigelt Platt 28 84 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Weinviertel

Clear purple red. The bouquet is a bit reticent, but there are cherries and dark berry fruits, some dust and a touch of metal. On the palate a very slightly sweet start followed by tart red fruit acidity. Very mild and soft tannin. Overall a bit dusty and still a bit locked. Wait until mid 2014 - 2015.

  • 2009 Hans Wirsching Iphöfer Kronsberg Spätburgunder Trocken 'S' 87 Points

    Germany, Franken

Transparent carmine red. Barnyard bouquet with minerals and smoke. On the palate the same; especially the smoke/toasted oak. No fruits. A touch of sweetness and also firm acidity. The smoke is what lasts in the finish. What to say overall? Difficult. The luxurious oak and smoke gives the wine the feeling of luxury, and to be honest, it really is pleasant. On the other hand the smoke overwhelms the fruits. I score it 87, but depending on your taste that could easily be 3 - 4 points more or less.

  • 2005 White Rock Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Laureate 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dense blood red color. Beautiful and intense bouquet with ripe sweet dark fruits and sweet spices. Also some eucalyptus. Same on the palate. High alcohol, but not disturbing. Harmonious wine with soft tannin and a lot of sweetness. Ready now, but it can easily last another 5+ years.

  • 2011 Viña Cobos Malbec Felino 86 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

Deep dark purple. In the bouquet intense dark cherries and some brown spiced biscuit impressions. On the palate a lot of sweet cherry fruits. Mild acidity and tannin. A mouth filling wine. Very ok, but no real complexity or finesse. Ready now and the next 4 - 5 years.

  • 2007 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Signature 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark purple red. Beautiful and intense bouquet with dark fruits, sweet spices, herbs, laurel, oak and some glue due to the high concentration. On the palate the same. Some vanilla, white pepper and sweetness as well. Also a good amount of pleasant acidity and creamy tannin. Unlike some other 2007 C9duP's which are getting locked now, this wine is still open for business. And with a future until probably at least 2020. 92+

  • 2003 Grangehurst Pinotage 87 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Dark garnet red with a brown rim. In the bouquet at first some lactic impressions which disappear with more airtime. Then sweet spices and smoke appear in the nose. On the palate sweet spices, chocolate and a firm amount of acidity. Slightly drying tannin in the finish. Overall a very good wine. And although pinotage doesn't belong to my favorites, this wine is really nice. Ready now and the next few years.

  • 2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Garnet red. In the bouquet subtle oak, sweet spices and a bit dusty. On the palate beautiful oak, red as well as black forest fruits, firm acidity and soft tannin. Not very concentrated, but an elegant wine. Ready now and the next few years.
