Introduction

We knew the theme, but we did not know what to expect. Unfortunately most wines were too old.
All wines were tasted fully blind.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 1959 Morin Pere & Fils Beaujolais

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais

In the bouquet rust, chocolate, mushrooms and autumn impressions. Some celery as well. On the palate rust, cinnamon, forest floor and some coffee. Hardly any acidity and tannin. Overall a slightly musty wine which is too old alright, but still drinkable. What a surprise! No score.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Berger

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

In the bouquet rust, coffee and forest floor. On the palate a very mature wine with rust, chocolate and in the distance still some red fruits. Mild old age acidity and completely melted tannin. Very mature and too old, but still drinkable and not really unpleasant. No score.

  • 1990 Château Sociando-Mallet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate dark fruits, leather, graphite, sweet spices and tobacco, good acidity and firm tannin. Still going strong and a firm rustic wine. It lacks a bit in finesse, but is certainly an excellent wine and not tired yet.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 1953 Château Bellegrave (Pauillac) 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Mature bouquet with red berry fruits, rust, forest floor and a touch of barnyard. Everything comes back on the palate in a very pleasant way. There is soft and mild acidity, a touch of sweetness and the melted tannin still has a soft bite. A really pleasant surprise at 62 years of age.

  • 1959 Château Duhart-Milon

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Cola brown color. In the bouquet coffee, tea and celery. On the palate full bodied, but dead and gone. Sharp and old age acidity. No pleasure at all anymore.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1969 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

In the bouquet there is a lot of intense barnyard, but also some sweet spices, autumn impressions, earth, mint and even some old blueberries and blackberries. On the palate chocolate, red fruits, coffee and figs, some pleasant sweetness and a high dose of old age acidity. It was a great surprise that of such an off vintage the wine was still so drinkable. No score.
