Introduction

We get 10 wines in 10 glasses. All wines of a different varietal or blend and from a different location. We have to tell in approx 1 hour where the wine is produced and of which varietal or traditional blend, the vintage and as many details as we can give. For big ego’s this is the ultimate way to land with both feet on the ground and become humble again ;-) ;-)!
(Because it was at my place, I know all the wines. But another participant puts my glasses in a different order, so I taste the wines blind as well. And believe me, then it is still not easy to do....)

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2013 Domaine des Nugues Beaujolais-Villages 80 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages

Transparent purple red. In the bouquet primary fruits like raspberries and cherry candy stick. Same on the palate. Ok freshness. Clean wine, but more like lemonade with alcohol.

  • 2011 Bodegas Luis Cañas Rioja Crianza 86 Points

A slightly different note than my previous one. In the bouquet red berry fruits, some cherries and sweet spices like vanilla. On the palate ripe fruits, a bit creamy and lactic, some vanilla again, medium acidity and soft tannin. Drink over the next 3+ years.

  • 2012 Chateau Tanunda Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Pnp raspberries and red cherries in the bouquet. With some more air also herbs and spices and some sweet licorice. Same on the palate, pleasant acidity and soft and round tannin. The wine improved considerably with some more air. Below $10 a very good qpr. Will improve with 2 - 3 years of ageing.

  • 2010 Rocca dei Mori Briaco Salento IGT 84 Points

    Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT

Very ripe dark cherries in the bouquet, some earth and vanilla as well. On the palate ripe dark and red berries, some spiciness, pepper, jammy, medium acidity and soft tannin. Easy going. The wine showed much better than last year, but still is a bit simple and boring.

  • 2011 E. Guigal St. Joseph 87 Points

In the bouquet at first mostly cherries and some spiciness, but with some more air also leather, bacon and firm minerality appeared. Same on the palate, red berries and dark cherries as well. • 2004 Rietine Chianti Classico Riserva 88 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Red color still with a slightly garnet rim. In the bouquet still cherries, some herbs and earth. On the palate cherries and red berries, a firm amount of good acidity, some noticeable bitterness and still slightly sticky and drying tannin in the finish. Really nice wine, ready now, but also still a few years of future ahead.

  • 2010 Viña Koyle Cabernet Sauvignon Royale 87 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

Not really clear red color with some garnet in the rim. In the bouquet at first red fruits like cherries and raspberries, but with more air time a lot of sweet spices and vanilla from the oak appeared. Same impressions on the palate. Some dark fruits as well and a lot of vanilla. Good and mild acidity as well as tannin. The wine is ready now and has a future of a few more years, but will not significantly improve. For what I paid (less than $15) this is a very good qpr wine.

  • 2002 Château Gruaud Larose 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Red with a carmine rim. In the bouquet a classical Bordeaux bouquet with cassis, other dark forest fruits, vanilla, sweet spiciness and beautiful oak. On the palate dark and red berries, just a touch of bell pepper, well dosed oak, beautiful acidity and still sticky, slightly drying tannin. There was a leftover of 1/3 bottle which I put in the cooler and drank the next day at room temperature. The second day it even showed more of its luxury. Great effort for 2002! Beautiful wine. Pnp still a bit too young. The second day perfectly ready. It should be no problem to cellar this wine until 2020. 90 - 92 for this time. One more bottle to go… ;-)
