Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted fully blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

In the bouquet red and dark berries, still youthful and creamy, herbs and spices, minerals and some tobacco. On the palate a typical Rhone blend with dark and red berries, a lot of herbs and spices, some mocha, vanilla, some sweetness, good acidity, round tannin with a good bite and some bitterness. Overall a beautiful and concentrated, still youthful wine which is just slightly more developed compared to last year and still youthful. Keep until 2018 – 2020+.

  • 2007 E. Guigal Gigondas 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Firm dark berries in the bouquet, garrigue, spices, licorice and some rustic impressions. On the palate also a firm wine with dark berries, herbs and spices, licorice, good acidity and firm, still sticky tannin and some bitterness in the finish. Overall a firm, but not extremely refined wine. Still youthful and might improve a bit with a few more years of ageing. Around 2020? 89+ for tonight.

  • 2005 Luddite Wines Shiraz 90 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Bot River

Beautiful bouquet with a lot of herbs and spices, red berries, smoke and tobacco in an elegant way. On the palate an elegant wine as well with dark and red forest fruits, chocolate, herbs and spices, vanilla, firm but good acidity and good tannin which is still sticky. This bottle was more reserved than the one I tasted November last year.

Expressive bouquet with a lot of garrigue, ripe red and dark berries, some animals, flint stone minerals and sweetness. Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Concentrated bouquet with dark forest fruits, licorice, a herbs and spice box of all sorts and a pleasant dose of oak. Everything from the nose comes back on the palate. Some chocolate as well. There is a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity and soft tannin. Overall a very tasty wine with a great length and really beautiful. The only thing is that the wine was much more developed than expected. Is it the bottle? I have a few, so there will be a follow up, probably this year. 92 - 93?

  • 2010 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Grand Grenache 66 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

In the bouquet dark berries, some minerals, pepper, perfume and also still a bit locked. On the palate dark berries, herbs and spices, laurel and salty licorice. Beautiful acidity and round tannin with a pleasant bite. Overall it definitely is a beautiful wine with good complexity, but also this bottle had a slight sparkle (see my –also blind- note of 2015/11/11). Really curious how this will age. For tonight because of the excellent taste still a score of 92.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Exceptionnelle 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Beautiful bouquet with garrigue, red berry fruits and sweet spices like cinnamon and tobacco. On the palate herbs and spices as well, ripe red berries, some chocolate and a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. There is mild tannin with still a soft and pleasant bite and the wine has a great length. The wine is in its maturity stage now, but there is enough power for several years more. Beautiful wine!

  • 2010 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Beautiful and complex bouquet with dark and red berries, garrigue, minerals and some pleasant rustic flavors which disappear after a while. On the palate beautiful fruits, herbs and spices, some earth, minerals, a great balance between acidity and sweetness and mild tannin with still a firm bite. This is a real beauty already, but in fact it is still much too young. Probably wise to wait until 2020 at least and it will probably drink lovely until at least the second half of the next decade. Great pleasure!
