Introduction

Ken and Maureen joined us for night two...

Flight 1 - Welcome wine along with another bottle of the 73 Heidsieck Royale (1 Note)

  • 1982 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Full golden color. Lovely rich round orange rind and spice on the nose. Huge rich fat honeyed spicy mineral palate with lanolin on the mid palate and hints of caramel on the finish. This wine was in fantastic shape and still had plenty of life and acidity remaining.

Flight 2 - With Steak Tartar (1 Note)

  • 1961 Pierre Ponnelle Corton-Clos du Roi 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

From mag. Full deep red color with pink edges. Fabulous bright strawberry red cherry nose with rose petal notes and some spiciness. Mmmmn, nice big bold black cherry fruit with brown sugar and anise spice notes. Similar to the Ponnelles from the previous evening, this wine had surprisingly rich deep full bodied black from for its age.

Flight 3 - With Trio of Soups (2 Notes)

  • 1926 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Medium red color with some fading at the edges. Interesting leather briar black friut nose. Big sour balck fruit on the palate, but began to decline pretty quickly in the glass. Perhaps a couple extra points from me for surviving 81 years with any fruit at all!

  • 1926 Château Beychevelle 80 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

A controversial wine that some liked better than I did. full deep opaque purple/red with brown edges. VERY odd aroma of lanolin, tide detergent, dill, and a hint of brown sugar mollases. Big black stewed fruit but still odd with almost stinky cheese notes. Probably just not a great bottle, but then again who knows with a wine this old. Really the only disappointment over two evenings of great wine.

Flight 4 - Intermezzo (1 Note)

Flight 5 - With Prime NY Strip (3 Notes)

  • 1953 Château Cheval Blanc 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Full deep purple color with red/pink edges. Forward aroma of red fruit, cedar, and graphite with spicy licorice hints. Nice rich black friu on the palate with mineral, coffee, and briar notes. Very lithe and etheral next to the other 53s. Probably got an extra point or so from me for the label.

  • 1953 Château Mouton Rothschild 94 Points

Crimson red color. Killer red fruit spicey nose with hints of green bell pepper. Lovley black fruit with serious graphite notes and just a hint of mint. Very nice. 94+pts.

  • 1953 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Coffee black red color. Killer aroma screaming blood and iron with graphite notes. Mmmmn, great red cassis fruit with pencil lead on the finish. Really stellar - a few gave the Cheval the nod for it's sophistication, but this was easily my favorite of the three 53s.

  • 1964 Château Haut-Brion 94 Points

From mag. Full purple with some red at the edges. Medium/full nose of tobacco and clean black fruit. Wow, lovely round lithe red fruit with classic HB iron notes. Very nice.

  • 1964 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 85 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Full purple red color. Funky red fruit nose with some bitterness. Also some VA I think. Quite stewy on the palate and not showing much. I was really looking forward to this and quite disappointed.
