Introduction

We tasted mostly 2010 Riserva Brunellos; mostly non-blind. Paired with a wonderful multi-course meal. Almost all the wines were decanted (slow-ox) overnight at cellar temp, and all were served at cellar temp. Pretty much every wine we tasted was spectacular, and so my notes are a bit short on those descriptors. The Riservas were amazing, but a pretty extracted bunch on the whole.

Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2010 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Soft ruby. On the nose: loads of earth, dark black fruit, and some brambly notes; after a while, soft orange peel and roses. On the palate, loads of white pepper at first, medium bodied.

  • 2010 Renieri Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Soft ruby. Barnyard funk at first; mushroomy notes; some sulfur notes. On the palate: black pepper, medium bodied; loads of slightly dusty tannins with a touch of pepper on the finish.

  • 2010 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Darker red in color. Roses, burnt orange peel, caramelized sugar. Very full bodied; loads of black pepper and not so much tannin on the finish. Very ripe and sweet in style.

  • 2010 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva PS

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

A touch of browning on the edges; otherwise deep red. Orange peel and caramelized sugar. Still a little closed by comparison with the previous three. Some sweetness and dark earthy black fruit on the palate. Full bodied, with very fine tannin that goes on for ages.

I had a taste of this earlier in the afternoon as well, and it was easily one of the most charming and complex young Brunello's I have ever tasted (so that is perhaps a standard of comparison for the other notes).

  • 2010 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

On the nose: sweet balsamic notes and orange peel; perhaps a touch riper than the Siro Pacenti PS. Very dense at first, though thinned out a bit quickly. Seemed to show lower acid than the PS as well.

  • 2010 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Darker red in color than the previous wines. Darker on the nose and palate as well. More overt balsamic sweetness; slightly less fruit forward than the Canalicchio or Siro Pacenti; nevertheless, great raspberry notes. Some toasted wood notes as well; loads of black pepper on the finish, which also is very tannic.

  • 2010 Podere Le Ripi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Much more classic nose than the previous wines: clean rosewater, burnt orange peel. Fantastic acidity; soft tannin on a long finish. Less overt and extracted in style than the previous wines.

  • 2007 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Showed beautifully, but much more ``modern" in style than the Lupi e Serene before. Very ripe: balsamico, dark blackberry on the nose. Very smooth and rich on the palate, showing sweetness. Just a hint of soft tannin on the finish.

  • 2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Very dark nose: balsamic, black raspberry. Very dense on the palate. Loads of tannin. Amazingly intense, but still amazingly beautiful.

Apparently showed much darker than the previous tasting where I felt like I got more classic (but still very ripe) brunello nose.

  • 2010 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

For a point of comparison, this was alongside the Valdicava. Super dark, extracted on the nose. Dark raspberry, loads of balsamic sweetness. Ultra chewy, chalky tannins.

  • 1997 Dalla Valle Pietre Rosse

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind, in constrast to most of the other bottles in the night. Fully mature; loads of damp earth, a touch of raspberry on the nose. Seemed like a touch of wet cardboard. Very soft on the palate, showing a little more raspberry. This reminded me a bit of the '07 La Serena Rosso for which I have some notes. Perhaps seemed excessively soft by comparison to what preceded it...

  • 2012 Andrew Will Sangiovese Ciel du Cheval Vineyard

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Tasted very young and a little hot. Very modern in style with loads of fruit; just not particularly distinguished in this company.

  • 2007 Frank Cornelissen Magma

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

What a change of pace from all Sangiovese. Tasted extremely young: nose reminded me a bit of brachetto with loads of strawberry and some ashy notes. On the palate, very light in style, but yet extremely tannic: more sweet strawberry and raspberry. Very interesting wine.

  • 2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Tasted this a few times: first after the rather fresh Cornelissen, but then alongside the 2010. This was showing just beautifully. Shows a touch of secondary; with balsamic sweetness and a touch of mint/rosemary. Some visible wood influence on the palate, with loads of tannin. Still a baby, but wonderful.

  • 2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Poker Face

    USA, California, Central Coast

I didn't want to like this wine, but it surprised me. Like an extremely ripe and unsubtle, but still very endearing, young Cote Rotie. Intense syrah fruit with a touch of the floral. Very ripe on the palate, but amazingly drinkable.
