Introduction

It was a pleasure to see Jesus and Eduardo and hear from them about the wines and the project of Equipo Navazos overall. The Navazos Botta wines are easily some of the best in the world, not only in their own category, but can stand against wines from any region in their intensity and complexity. I also want to thank Morrell Wine Co. and their team for putting this educational tasting together. It is not often that one gets to taste so many of these rare wines at the same time and compare them against each other.
For the first time i think i was able to sip 3 separate wines that could have been in the Palo Cortado category and discuss the choices made by the winemakers on how to label them.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Equipo Navazos La Bota de Florpower 53 "Más Allá MMX" 91 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

beautiful, light expression of Palomino from Sanlucar aged in casks with flor like fino but not fortified. light apricot, touch of salt on the nose, mid is ripe, nutty and chewy. really light and lovely. i would decant - seems to open more with some air. the 12% alc makes this a "guilt free" indulgence.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • NV Equipo Navazos La Bota de Palo Cortado 41 "Bota NO" 96 Points

Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda

this was my favorite of the dry sherries. Single cask, at about 70+ years of age, bottled in 2013. starts off with a blast of nail polish, but blows off to reveal a sexy almond and caramel note. a touch of grilled peach and honey. mid is beautiful, unctuous, with sweet nutty notes and salty candy feel... tart notes on the finish with dry fruits..this is simply marvelous. I can see sipping this and watching the sunset...and i am not sure which of the two would be more impressive.
