United Cellars Riesling free for all. I must confess that I only thought that there would be 6-8 wines there so I was exceedingly pleased to discover over 30 wines on show. Notes reflect the relative elbows at dawn nature of the tasting
And done…phew…some high points and a few low…I still find that Australian Rieslings tend to lime juice or cordial but there were some outliers here that were far more interesting. Having said that my WotN was the Heymann Lowenstein…and the Meyer Fonne Kaefferkopf...
2016 Adelina Riesling Polish Hill
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
muted wet stone and lime….tartly citrus with lime and lime pith and touches of skins. Finishes a touch warm

2016 Adelina Riesling
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
Muted fruit (lime) and some stony minerality…Tangy and zesty with quite sharp acidity. Lacks a little fruit on the palate. Hmm.

2016 Adelina Riesling Dora the Amphora
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
Pretty almost peach fruit beneath citrus notes…Hmm, quite fat on the palate with a saline element. Interesting. The nose doesn't translate to the palate the lack of acidity (for a Riesling and compared to the first two wines) is a bit of a concern.

2016 Woods Crampton Riesling White Label
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
lime cordial…restrained acidity, touches of residual sugar married to the lime fruit which drops off quite quickly allowing the acidity to sharpen on the finish

2016 Woods Crampton Riesling Black Label
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Lime, touches of curd, wet stone….tart but on the fleshy and juicy side with some mid palate grip and roundness of palate. Rather nice

2015 Rippon Riesling Jeunesse
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka
Muted lime, and green apples. Slight touches of sweet spice…more of the same on the palate…the tartness is not out of place. Hmm.

2013 Rippon Riesling Mature Vine
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka
Concentrated lime cordial…more of the some on the palate but with tight mid palate grip and enamel stripping acid. Lots and lots of time required.

2011 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Tradition
France, Alsace
Honey, cream, touches of orange…a little savoury with honeyed notes. Perhaps slight botrytis here? Hmm

2012 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Clos Sand Flawed
France, Alsace
Meaty, chicken, herbs over honey and lime…tart and savoury. Hmm. Not sure if this is right. Possible FLAW

2008 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Steingrübler
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Initially oxidation over honey, slight botrytis and green apple…more tart apple and savoury honey on the palate. Hmm.

2007 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Cream, honey, apple, I'm also getting a slightly buttery note as well…Rich, quite generous with similar flavours to the ones but the honey more to the fore. Nice

2010 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Slightly oxidate, cream, stone and orchard fruit. Slight honey…Green apple, tart with some phenolic grip on the mid palate. Long. Okay

2016 Goon Tycoons Riesling Supermodel
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
perfumed with blossoms and peachy fruit backed by sweet spice…this doesn't translate to the palate unfortunately which proves to be a bit savoury and dry. Pity.

2014 Mount Edward Riesling Morrison Vineyard
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
slight kerosene crowds muted orchard fruits…more of the same on the palate with plentiful grip across the mouth and gums. Kind of nice.

2015 Rita & Rudolf Trossen Riesling Schieferblume
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Crushed apples, clove, nutmeg…quite cider with spices on the palate. Apple skins here as well that are a little drying. Hmm

2016 Neil Pike Riesling United Cellars
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Lime and apple, very fruit forward…Sharply acidic and drying grip closes this down. Cellar time (not much - say 2-4 years) might make this shine…

2016 Tom Barry Riesling United Cellars Selection
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
more muted orchard fruit that it's housemate. Apples and pears for me. More of the same on the palate. Easy. Quaffable. Pleasant.

2015 Meyer-Fonné Riesling Reserve

Apples. Cream, blossom…more honeyed on the palate with a touch of bitterness and quite drying grip.

2014 Meyer-Fonné Riesling Kaefferkopf
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Muted, touches of oyster shell…great palate though with stone fruit and citrus married to zesty acidity and grippy tannins. All are beautifully balanced. Very good.

2013 Hochkirch Riesling

2016 Frankland Estate Riesling Isolation Ridge Vineyard
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
apple and pear with a splash of lime cordial on the nose and equally refreshing and enjoyable on the palate. Nicely balanced, everything in it's right place, and dangerously quaffable.

2016 Frankland Estate Riesling Poison Hill Vineyard
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
Slight stone fruit, peach almost with a slight reductive note. Lack a little acidity on the palate though and comes across a little flaccid.

2015 Gunderloch Fritz's Riesling
Germany, Rheinhessen
wet stone, slight herbaceousness…juicy to the point of tartness, fleshy and spicy. Lacks fruit but nice enough.

2015 Wittmann Riesling 100 Hügel
Germany, Rheinhessen
Slight sulphur, wet stone, over peach fruit….Fruit tends to orchard underpinned by wild herbs on the palate, fresh and lovely but , perhaps, a little short.

2015 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Schieferterrassen
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
funky, plenty of sulphur over exceedingly muted fruit. ..fruit far more to the fore on the palate making this a very desirable beverage…so much so that it proved to be my first non-spit of the evening. Very good indeed.

2014 Dönnhoff Riesling Trocken

fruit forward and friendly with orchard apple and a touch of residual sugar: Lending a touch of apple lolly. Lovely

2016 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Slight sulphur, muted citrus, quite closed…perhaps my palate has been conquered by the previous German invasion but this is, to me, a little flat.

2016 Felton Road Dry Riesling
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
orchard fruit, wet stone, meaty wild ferment notes on the nose…more fleshy and juicy than zesty with orchard fruit, a touch of front of mouth grip and an almost peppery spice to the finish.

2014 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Turckheim
France, Alsace
Initially it has tiny botrytis touches by I presume my nose is playing up. Slight oxidative notes…touch of spritz and drying mid palate grip. Again there is that slightly botrytised note on the palate. It's also a little short for a wine of this quality. Hmm

2015 Frogmore Creek Riesling FGR
Australia, Tasmania
Smells nice enough the then the sugar isn't really integrated: the acidity washes it, and the fruit, away and leaves a rather unpleasant sharp dryness presumably from skins…

2015 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
sulphur on the nose, crunchy red apple on the palate. Not the most complex of wines but just a lovely fresh balanced drop that is a pleasure to taste (and, based on previous experience, drink)

2016 Mount Horrocks Riesling Cordon Cut
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
lime marmalade, touches of sweet spice and more of the same on the palate with sufficient acidity to rein in the obtrusive sugar content. This is just the wrong side of the fence from a cloying perspective but sooooo close that I think a citrus tart will swing it back into the safety zone.

2014 Brackenwood Vineyard Riesling Botrytis
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Kerosene, muted ripe apple, slight sulphur and citrus. More lime marmalade and apple compote on the palate. It's a touch meh for me but probably because it's at the end of the night and the acidity isn't quite cleaning things up as much as I'd like it to.
