France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A relatively closed, primary bouquet of lemon zest with some mintiness and touches of sulphides. On palate, very young seeming, with prominent acids. Precise, citric and pure. Still, it's rich, large scaled and powerful. For that reason, I picked it as a Meursault, but did not pick up the 2011 or Boillot character (after the reveal, I could see the former, but not necessarily the latter). Blanched almonds, pears and some spicy oak. Good length. Give it 3+ years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
An attractive, polished nose of black cherries, blackberries and minerals, with something musky, gamey and earthy in the background. In the mouth, the first impression is of the bright acidity. A very brisk, fresh and young seeming Burgundy. I guessed it might be an '08 Corton. A good volume of dense black fruit. Svelte, fine grained tannins. No edges to this wine. More fruit and intensity than the Mugnier, to offset the serious tannin structure. Surprisingly approachable now, I'd ideally give it another 5+ years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Very deep, dark colour. Blackberries, dark plums and other dark fruit, with sous bois, soil and something feral and meaty on bouquet. In the mouth, black fruit, mushrooms, charcoaled game meats and iron. A big tannic structure, with real grip on the back palate, a little drying on the finish. For a 2009, I was surprised that this Mugnier was drinking so well on the night, but it would reward 5-10+ more years in the cellar, I'd say.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Blackberries and other black, and some blue, fruit aromas, with high toned flinty minerals. On palate, leaner, dilute, not surprising for this Climat, for a 2007. Quite intense, with racy acidity. Black cherries, dark chocolate and slatey minerals. Fine grained tannins. I like this lighter style of Burgundy but some may see it as too linear and skinny. No hurry needed but there for drinking now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Lovely, ethereal perfumes, Vosne dark spices, espresso and dark florals. Very different on palate. Much more serious, structured, weighty and complex. Concentrated and dense. Black cherries, bramble, mocha, peaty soil and dark spices. Quite sleek and classy, I thought this wine was a Vosne, not a Morey. Fruit, acids and tannins in excellent balance. For drinking in the next 10+ years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Dark ruby just beginning to brick at the rim. A heavenly bouquet of red currants, red cherries, warm earth, mixed dried spices and stony minerals. On palate, a gorgeous CSJ, relatively open, showing appropriate evolution for a 16 year old wine. Serious Grand Cru structure and gravitas. Lovely, precise acidity. A core of sappy red berry fruit. Refined and satiny with an attractive, austere 2001 character. Toasty oak largely consumed and aligned. Great length. Finishing the bottle the next day it had moved more secondary, savoury, showing fallen leaves and a little tar. A superb wine, I sense, at the start of a long drinking window.
