Introduction

New vintage of Cape Mentelle's and some older ring ins.

Flight 1 - Bracket one - White (3 Notes)

Bit of a hmm bracket for me

  • 2016 Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Medium minus intensity aromas of herbaceous notes, gooseberry, slight green apple and unripe passion fruit as well but all very muted. Tart and quite green on the palate, apple, touch of bitter pear skin, slightly briny note as well, medium length. With time the fruit ripens but I still find this a bit meh.

  • 2014 Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon Wallcliffe

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Ooh, hello white Bordeaux style, touches of funkiness; wild ferment (?), leesy as well, yoghurt almost and a touch of cream over orchard fruit and fresh herbs. Bit of oak as well. On the palate it's savoury and juicy but the fruit doesn’t really through under this wine making; green apple fruit predominantly. Rich compare to the first wine but a little worked for me.

  • 2015 Cape Mentelle Chardonnay

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Butter, oak, sweet spice, toast tending to biscuit over peach fruit. Quite lean though, touches of lemon peel as well. Juicy, fleshy and initially, fruity then buttered oak notes intrude a little and swamps the fruit on the finish lending a touch of bitterness. Hmm

Flight 2 - Bracket two - Random reds (2 Notes)

yeah, Zin sucker I am...

  • 2014 Cape Mentelle Shiraz

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Polished, cream, black berry over plums and a slightly briny, savoury notes. Kind of hits a middle ground between South Australia and the Hunter. Slightly peppery spice, juicy. The fruit is a little more muted here and more plummy but still quite broad on the palate. Quite soft tannins and a little warm spice on the finish. Meh

  • 2015 Cape Mentelle Zinfandel

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Black cherry, plums, less vanilla but still some oak and spice, ripe but not jammy. Juicy, spicy, quite dense tannins but still quite soft textured. Tends to Durif from a weight perspective. Exceedingly long. Nicely done.

Flight 3 - Bracket three - Cabernet and blends (6 Notes)

Probably the Wallcliffe which kind of grew on me. All of the cabs were popped and poured so I think a good old fashioned decant could have helped all of them, especially the magnums.

  • 2014 Cape Mentelle Trinders Cabernet Merlot

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

herbaceous, slightly eucalyptus, mint, muted black berry, pencil shavings and touches of ripe plum. With time the plum note gains on the nose. Juicy wet fruit, black berry and plum. Relatively soft tannins. Pretty, easy.

  • 2014 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Medium minus intensity aromas, slightly dusty, sweet berry fruit, pencil shavings, almost reductive and an a farty note as well. Opens with time to reveal a polished oak and cassis notes. Sweet spice grows with time. Blackcurrant, ripe but not over ripe, fruit, tannins are broad and drying but relatively silky and fine. Sufficient, just, acidity to carry it. Hmm.

  • 2011 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

From magnum. Blackcurrant, cassis but, perhaps, a little riper. Cream, vanilla, sweet spice, pencil shavings. Juicy, bit of mid palate scoop, sweet blackcurrant fruit and a little spice. Tannins are drying and quite talc textured. Touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Fruit persists. Hmm.

  • 2009 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

From magnum. Polished oak, slight wild ferment funkiness, almost oxidised note and meaty note as well over slightly jammy black fruit with cream and vanilla…this is taking quite a while to open up in the glass. Slight leather as well. Juicy acidity, almost sour in fact, blackcurrant, tight and plentiful tannins are a little course. Asian five spice. The fruit persists but only just. Hmm.

  • 1999 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Hmm, aged and plenty of it. Funky, leathery, spiced, fruit is quite muted. Almost bretty, meaty, savoury. Massive tannins, muted fruit, funky palate. Tired but interesting.

  • 2014 Cape Mentelle Cabernet & Cabernet Franc Wallcliffe

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

slight pencil shavings, sweet spice, blackcurrant, cream, vanilla, ripe plums. Again, with time, the plums grow more prominent on the nose as well as the new oak lending vanilla and caramel. On the palate ,though, ti's drying tannins, with more pencil shavings and black fruit all carries. Bit of alcohol warmth on the finish. Long finish in fact. Good.

Closing

My first tasting here at Winesquare at Tim, from Peter's tastings, recommendation. Nice tasting. Loved the Zin. And enjoyed the Wallcliffe Red as well. The 1999 was served as a blind options game which somehow I bluffed my way to victory in.
