PHMG WAG: 2012 Oregon Pinot Noir Remix

Tasted Saturday, December 2, 2017 by Grinner with 220 views

Introduction

We did this in 5/14 and the wines needed more time, so here they are again with a touch of overlap. Bought on release, stored fairly cool, opened for over 4 hours, and served at about 60 degrees non-blinded.

Flight 1 - The Opener (1 Note)

Served with eggs...

Flight 2 - The OPN's (8 Notes)

My favorite food match this evening was the thinly sliced smoked duck breast and any Pinot. Salmon pate a close second.

  • 2012 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Mahonia Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

"The first ice skater" by which others will be judged in this tasting. Overall a very nice, but basic pinot. Tart cherry, raspberry, cranberry, and spice on decent structure. Faded a bit overnight. Now-2019.

  • 2012 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Balcombe Vineyard Dundee Hills 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

A darker more interesting wine than the Evesham Wood before it. Black cherry, earth, forest floor and floral notes stand out. Nice depth and length, with no fall off on day 2. Now-2022.

  • 2012 Broadley Vineyards Pinot Noir Claudia's Choice 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Biggest WOTN in terms of structure. A mineral / stone component backs up the black cherry and plum fruit. Maybe better on day 2! Wait a little: 2018-2022

  • 2012 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

5/14 note: One of my fave's this evening, AND for a long time, going way back to the '92 Panther Creek Carter (made by Ken Wright). Dark and structured with dense black fruit and spice, yet manages to stay light on it's feet and be juicy. Best 2015-2019 (1455 views) (92pts).

Now: the structure has mellowed, leaving behind a plush mouthfeel with the same black fruit and spice, a touch of cola and florals. A little romantic since the '92 PCC was our first ever OPN. Now-2019.

  • 2012 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Jerome Reserve 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Ironic that we had just been talking about wine tasting in Az between Jerome and Sedona... This had the tightest nose of the night but then on the palate you get immediate sweet cherry, boysenberry, and earth in good balance with acidity and tannins. Better on day 2! Drink 2018-2022

  • 2012 Argyle Pinot Noir Spirithouse 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

More open and elegant than the Lemelson before it. More red fruit than black, with a little supporting stone note. Now-2019.

  • 2012 Bergström Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Best Bergstrom I've had in a year or more, my opinion had really been sagging. Dense black cherry, black raspberry, and plum with hints of spice, smoke / oak that really held its own on day 2. Now-2022.

  • 2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Special Selection Shea Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

My WOTN, this has everything from a beautiful open nose to the longest finish. Layers of fruit without being dense, savory notes without being funky, nicely structured without being heavy or overly tannic. Great on day 2 also. Now through twenty twenty something!

Flight 3 - Dessert (1 Note)

Served with some macarons.

  • 2006 Château Coutet Barsac 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Off topic for dessert, I just don't want to open something like this without a crowd around. This bottle housed a beautiful light golden colored wine with botrytis, yellow stone fruit, tropical fruit, spice, and lemon zest flavors coating your palate. Then ZING, some nice acidity cleans up. My next in 3-4 years.

Closing

This met expectations, I think the 5-7 year drinking window for this vintage is just right so far.
