Introduction

In this case we could bring a wine or pay an amount, so the person resposible for organizing the tasting could decide what to put on the table. We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted fully blind.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Batailley 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, tobacco, vanilla and some licorice. On the palate dark and red berries, beautiful acidity, round tannin which still has a pleasant bite, but is a bit drying as well. A bit short in the finish, but certainly a very pleasurable wine. 89 – 90

  • 2004 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful and slightly perfumed bouquet with dark berries, some autumn forest and vanilla. On the palate dark berries, some bell pepper, leather and caramel, well integrated oak, good acidity and soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. For me personally a really pleasant surprise for this domain.

  • 2003 Château d'Armailhac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Just in the glass the wine was not very expressive and even a bit dusty, but there were dark berries like cassis and some cedar as well. On the palate a juicy wine with dark berries, some lead pencil shavings, vanilla, chocolate, beautiful acidity and round, but still firm tannin which can last for another 3+ years. Beautiful drinking stage when given some air time.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Très Pauillac in the bouquet with dark berries, graphite, cedar, elegant oak, vanilla, leather and some autumn impressions. On the palate dark berries, a firm amount of good acidity, some bell pepper, mild and good tannin with a pleasant bite. Imho the most harmonious wine of the flight. 91 - 92

  • 1999 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The bouquet shows a lot of vanilla and is a bit dusty, some green impressions and horse saddle leather. On the palate expressive and mouth spreading with cassis and tannin which is a bit sticky. Juicy wine with some chocolate in the finish. Still a very nice wine which is not tired yet.

  • 1999 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A surprise to taste this wine again within a month and tasting it completely blind again, I did not recognize it. In the flight this was the wine with relatively the most primary flavors in the bouquet; cherries, cassis, sweet spices, green herbs, coffee, caramel, oak and cedar. On the palate juicy, some green components, coffee, leather and caramel. A complex and beautiful wine. 91-92

Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, cedar, vanilla, cigar, pleasant barnyard and leather. On the palate the wine shows maturity, beautiful oak, lead pencil shavings, beautiful acidity, tannin with still a soft bite and some pleasant sweetness and bitterness in the finish. 92 - 93

  • 1992 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Reading back my note from 2011, this is a pleasant surprise. The bouquet is pleasantly stinky, with stable smells, brush wood, earth and even some graphite. On the palate juicy dark berries, red fruit acidity, some green impressions and also vanilla. A light bodied wine with still good acidity. Still gives pleasure :-)

  • 2000 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

In the bouquet dark berries like cassis, vanilla, cedar, cigar, leather, concentrated and complex. On the palate a beauty with concentrated dark berry juice like blackberry and cassis, cedar and vanilla. Beautiful acidity and tannin, full bodied, juicy and pleasant bitterness in the finish. Overall a delicious wine which is showing its beauty already and it still holds a promise with even more finesse for the future. Great wine!!

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautifully mature and luxurious bouquet with truffle, brown spiced biscuit, cigar and vanilla. On the palate still a juicy wine with a lot of sweet spices, beautiful acidity, pleasant sweetness and a lot of length. A great wine still.
