Introduction

Amazingly, these notes represent just a small set of the wines opened by our gracious hosts and their guests.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2009 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

From magnum, pop n' pour. Good richness and roundness with no signs of overt ripeness. Structure is well-integrated and there are no hard edges here. Very smooth. Not all that complex at this stage but modest spice and earth notes add interest. Lots to like here with a forward wine in a classical frame.

  • 2003 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Wow, this is a really striking and pretty wine with no telltale '03 vintage markers. The red cherry fruit is elegant and bright with lots of clay, floral and spice notes throughout. Bright acidity carries the fruit and provides freshness and lift. In a great spot now, should hold and potentially even improve. I like this a lot right now.

  • 2003 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Another high end Burg that belies the '03 vintage. There is richness and fruit density without any roasted qualities. Appealing and prominent baking spice intermingled with red and black cherry. Fresh acids and still firm tannins provide grip. This has a long ways to go and should improve from here.

  • 2003 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Tasty, for sure, but showing '03 character with very rich and almost roasted black cherry fruit. While I like the unabashed Gevrey meatiness and rich fruit, this is a bit clumsy and inelegant. I'd probably drink up as it isn't getting better from here.

  • 2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

This took a double decant to wake up, but when it did I loved the Vosne character that started to blossom. Loads of spice and black cherry fruit. Graceful across the palate. A bit thin in the finish, but otherwise a very good wine.

  • 2002 Domaine Anne Gros Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Super appealing aromas of Vosne spice and black cherry with some licorice throw in for good measure. The palate is a bit simpler and four square but tasty and appealing none the less. Lip-smacking good and would drink this every day if offered. 90+ point nose, 89 points overall.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Post-Super Bowl cellar raid treat. Small glass from a bottle that was passed around. Showy and forward already with good concentration of black cherry. Good meat and spice notes throughout. Very Gevrey, but didn't stand out as GC from the brief glimpse tonight.

  • 2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Post-Super Bowl cellar raid treat. This got a quick double decant (I think) before getting passed around. Just starting to show its potential. A good core of red fruit that is elegant despite some still-firm structure beneath. Needs a lot more time or air.

  • 2003 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A terrific vintage for this wine. Some richness and plushness of fruit, but no signs of a roasted character. Youthful rich plum with cedar and bell pepper. Round, yet firm tannins balance out the abundant fruit. Very good, if a little inelegant for PLL.

  • 2003 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Big bold and rich plum fruit with fairly prominent mocha and oak spice notes. The palate has loads of delicious, sweet plum fruit. Good balancing structure. A bit of a hedonistic treat, but I far prefer a more traditionally styled Napa Cab or Bordeaux. 90 points, but I can see Cult Cab enthusiasts scoring this 4-6 points higher.

  • 2015 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chardonnay Bourgogne 85 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Steely, minerally and bright. Fairly nondescript with minimal depth. A serviceable quaffer.

  • 2003 Domaine Francois Lamarche Grands-Echezeaux 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

A bit rustic which showed awkward with the richer, more forward fruit of the vintage. Lots of black cherry, but just dulled out by a rusticity that I didn't care for in this particular wine.
