Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 1973 G. H. Mumm & Cie Champagne René Lalou 93 Points

    France, Champagne

This bottle has aged brilliantly. Definitely shows its age, but there's a really spry and mischievous freshness underneath all those sherry tones. A bit saline in character as well. The bubbles here are still ridiculously lively too.

  • 1995 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

It's been a while since I've crossed paths with this wine, but it's every bit as good as I remember it. This is a vintage that shows the rich Krug style so very well. Sweet apples and bread on the palate. There aren't any oxidative notes here; this is just a young and powerfully rich champagne.

  • 2007 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Premoxed. Made more obvious by the 2009 which we managed to sneak a taste of from the table next to us.

  • 2009 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

This is Boillot at its finest. A reductive and slightly oaky nose, with a generous serving of white fruit. The palate is fat and rich and expands horizontally. But the driving acidity on the back end here gives this a second dimension to move across the palate.

  • 2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Such a frustrating producer. Every third or fourth bottle I have is brilliant, the rest complete duds. This one is a winner. It's showing incredibly well, with just a slight bit of fruit, but tons of bracing minerality and acidity here. Lean, but this one works somehow. There's enough flesh here to drive the rest of the wine. Very nice stuff; I do enjoy the wines when they're not reductive duds that never open up.

  • 2005 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Nahe

#07-06, 8.5% abv. A very nice bottle, with just a smidge of riper fruit. There's plenty of acidity to bolster it, and also a really good kick of slate as well to round out the package. This does feel a little soft to me, so I'm not entirely sure how I'll judge the longer term potential on this, but it seems as ready as it's ever going to be.

  • 1952 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Reserva Especial Flawed

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

"Old and weird, and a little bit corked." Actually a lot corked. But no one else seemed to think so (they and their yak palates all just said it smelled like old wine).

  • 1989 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Meunier 88 Points

    USA, Oregon

Served double blind, but really, there wasn't any way to reach this conclusion. I had thought it was old world, given all the acidity here. It was initially very thin, and had a weird candied fruit quality to it. Frankly, at first, I thought this was terrible. But air was certainly a friend to this, and it grew more flesh as the night wore on. Eventually the palate did fill out, but this was still a very high-toned wine and no amount of fruit was going to fill the gap. Heaps of acid.

  • 1998 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Le Gréal 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Stunning Hermitage. This is everything a non-Chave Hermitage should be. A touch of olive and spice, but silky fruit and potent earth tones as well. Very thickly textured on the palate, with a saline/savory element that is incredibly powerful.
