A Last Minute Saturday Evening

Introduction

This was a nice little last minute get together. Nothing fancy, keep it simple, with an interesting mix of wines.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Alvear Montilla-Moriles Amontillado Carlos VII

    Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles

Can't say I found this enjoyable, rather woody and harsh mid palate, it does finish a bit nicer with a maple like quality that lingers.

  • 2007 Jean et Sébastien Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light gold color, drank 1 glass over an hour. Hadn't had this in a year and it continues to roll on with such nice Chablis definition. Plenty of saline and briny earthiness that fill the nose and palate; brisk and expressive on the nose with citrus; lemon-lime and quite crisp. Love this 92+pts.

  • 2005 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I like the nose, complex with marzipan, apple peel, lots of chalk, toast and a foamy mousse. The palate is medium plus bodied, honey, marzipan, apple, apple peel, poached pear, dough, moderate oxidative style, chalk and citrus finish. Very solid.

  • 2005 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 93 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Medium dark red color. Splash decant, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. I was really surprised how well this was drinking, really pretty right from the start. Evocative nose with a fine perfume of flowers, leather and red fruits, earth, with hints of dried wood and dill in the background. I love how the wood frames everything with subtle accents on both the nose and palate. The medium bodied palate shows a lot of earth, tart plum, tart berry, oak, tar and burnt embers, light dill, soft tannins and a long finish. Loved it. 93+pts.

  • 1999 Château Rauzan-Ségla 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark red color. Decanted for about an hour, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Another wine in a very good place, and I think far better than most of the notes I'm seeing. The nose is delicious, earthy, mushroom, red fruit, graphite and dried fruits. The palate too is ready and lovely, soft texture and fine sleek tannins, balanced and follows the nose nicely. This seems like it is at peak, but not in any danger of falling off any time soon. Drink now and over the next 10 years.

  • 2008 Casa Vinicola D'Angelo Aglianico del Vulture Riserva Caselle 89 Points

    Italy, Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture

PNP, dark fruits, very firm tannins, blackberry, some earth, charcoal, anise and black cherry. I like the nose more than the palate at this stage.

  • 2003 Château Troplong Mondot 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very dark red/purple color. This probably got close to 90 minutes in the decanter. The nose is rather intense, graphite, dark and high toned, creme de cassis, some dried herb, with a savory, meatiness. The palate is rather inky with more intensity, cassis, sour cherry, kir, oak, and prominent tannins and some sharpness overall. I expected more from this. Most of the '03's that I have had have been drinking pretty well at this point, hopefully this has better years ahead.

  • 2003 Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon Réserve Spéciale 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Very dark red color. Decanted for 90 minutes. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This still took some glass time to flesh out. There was some heat initially on the nose and palate, and while it settled in, it wasn't completely gone either. Full bodied, glycerin, cassis, fairly long with pretty oak spice notes, dark with tar and scorched earth. Good, could use even more time really.
