Introduction

This was the monthly big tasting group with 9 of us tonight. The theme was Chards from anywhere. There was a decidedly new world twist tonight and the wines didn't disappooint.

Flight 1 (14 Notes)

  • NV Fallet-Dart Champagne Grande Selection Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This showed a lot of richness and round character on the palate, more golden fruits with a good bit of depth and texture, good acid. I think the texture really won me over tonight. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2006 Pierre Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 92 Points

  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Ultra pale color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Again this is so delicate with such graceful straberry, dried herbs, almost a Provencal character, strawberry chiffon, lifted and floral. Just gorgeous and long. Really nice with hamachi crudo.

Tasting pour. Tart apple, light, good acidity, not much minerality, has improved somewhat with bottle age.

  • 2007 Domaine Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light golden color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This had tons of saline and seashore character, immensely round with impresssive depth, lemon, lemon oil and beeswax. Grand cru weight, complexity, and balance. Loved it. 93+pts.

  • 2014 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale green color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was immensely primary and showing equally immense potential. So tart right now with ultra tart citrus and sour apple but really crazy mineraity right now. Brisk, tart, grapefruit, citrus, loads of saline, so tightly coiled, but ready to spring as well. 93pts with a couple potential points of upside.

  • 2009 Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains 94 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Light-medium golden color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Oh, this had me from the first sip. I was totally captivated by the complexity and sheer depth. The fruit profile was extraordinary really - pear, lemon, meyer lemon, ripe apple; and minerality while not dominating had a noteworthy presence. I love the creamy texture and almond nuthorn nuances, but the balance here is most striking along with the sheer tingling across the palate. Very nice length too. This is in a wonderful place. 93+ to 94pts. 7.5K

  • 2010 Failla Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I thought this good, lemon, a moderate amount of tropical fruit, less perceptable minerality especially with its peers in the flight ('10 Boillot Meursault Gennand '09 Mount Eden), but still good. My third of the flight.

  • 2010 Domaine Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Right in my wheel house this was by far the most mineral drive, save the '14 Fevre Lys. Almost crystalline this hits the slate notes and has a good does of lemon and lemon oil, tart acid, modest oak and spices. Right up there with the Mt Eden in the flight though less complex overall.

  • 2013 Hanzell Chardonnay 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Pale green collor. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Same bottle as Chablis28. Very tart tonight, sour grapefruit, sour lemon, kind of aggressive right now, but the stuffing is there. 90+ to 91(+)pts

  • 2013 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 93 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Pale green color. Drank 1 glass over 75 minutes. This was showing great, brine, mineral, citrus, more saline, bright and fresh. No tropical notes on this ata ll tonight.

  • 2014 Antica Terra Chardonnay Aurata

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I had high expectations for this, but I have to admit it kind of got lost in the end of the night shuffle. In all honesty it wasn't all that memorable. Rather tart, tart citrus, spice, did not have as much body or texture as I expected. It was good, maybe a little young yet. 90-91?pts.

  • 2016 Far Niente Chardonnay 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A little young and boisterous; good concentration, tropical fruit and melon, pineapple custard, medium body, modest oak. 90+ to 91pts.

  • 1977 Warre Porto Vintage

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Was looking forward to this, but for me, I didn't find much of anything in the way of fruit left, subtle raisin liqueur at best, dominated by the alcohol and the wood influence that remains. Seen much better days -too bad. Some saw more in this than I though.
