  • A real surprise here--the third bottle of this that I've opened, and by a long shot the best! I had my doubts on a heavily corroded capsule and a cork that instantly slid into the bottle, but to my surprise, this seems to have been kept perfectly!

Beautiful color showing a nice transition between ruby and more of a brick red. Much deeper color than I have seen in previous bottles from Warres in this vintage, and much more reminiscent of the '94--generally a richer vintage for Warres.

This had developed perfectly. Mellow and smooth, with a surprisingly rich finish. Nice light raisiny notes with a deep, molassesy note like Christmas pudding. Not the most complex port out there, but a perfect example of what the right storage (not on my part!) can do to make the absolute most of a nearly 50 year-old wine!

  • A beautiful clean spirit cuts black fruits. It has florals and licorice notes and is complex and engaging. It is concentrated yet light on its feet and finishes with freshness and persistence. Still very young.

  • Vraiment un porto magnifique, à point, translucide, nez de framboise et de poire william, soyeux et voluptueux en bouche, longue finale.

  • I see that I started a note 2 years ago and didn't finish it. So this time the cork was again crappy, loose and I nearly pushed it into the bottle. It was just the sharp fine screw of the Durand that enabled me to hook it, and it came out leaving only a couple of bits behind. However the excellent capsule did what the cork would probably have failed to do. Level was excellent, and wine decanted cleanly. Mature colour, and nose quite lovely, and lively, reminiscent of Burgundy in a way. Mouthfeel very good, slightly uneven if one wanted to be critical, but alcohol and acid balance just right, mercifully. I doubt that after a dozen Burgundys my friends will be critical. I rarely give marks, but this would have to be a 93+.

Owned since release, stored quite well and hardly moved. A compensation for getting old. I have bought 21st century VPs but I'm not going to last long enough to taste them at this optimum stage.

edit, next day: not quite as good as before. A bit of firmness in the mid palate, a bit uneven in a way. Aftertaste a bit dry. I'll leave the mark at 93 though.
