Introduction

KC had prepared pork and venison ragu and we went through everything at home (other than my awful homemade Mudgee Shiraz) to see what worked best.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2017 Ravensworth Sangiovese

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Red cherry, tomato leaf, whole berry fruit, fresh acidity. Yum and worked with the Ragu

  • 2014 Telmo Rodríguez Mencía Valdeorras Gaba do Xil

    Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras

Acetone over cherry that proves quite sour and fresh on the palate which, itself, has quite reasonable breadth. There is a touch of dirtiness here as well which I kind of like.

  • 2012 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Le Pas de l'Aigle

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

gamey, smells dense, a little red fruit and plenty of black pepper spice. In the mouth it's big, bold and brash, peppery spice, muted red over black fruit, tannins lend tightness on the palate but not much texture - not exactly silky but quite soft - and there is some alcoholic warmth here as well. Hmm.

  • 2017 Brave New Wine Shiraz Schadenfreude

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Denmark

Perfumed, rose petal, black and green peppercorn, a little blackberry and a lot of whole bunch…ooh, it's a little dirty on the palate - wild ferment? And similar flavours to the nose here. Really fresh as well with mouth watering acidity. Pretty good and great with the Ragu.

  • 2016 Château La Diffre Côtes du Rhône

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

Muted red fruit with peppery spice, quite clean though. Palate is a little anonymous sweet berry fruit, exceedingly lightweight tannins but lacks acidity and comes across a bit soupy. Still clean though here. Hmm.

Closing

That was a lot fun, the lighter weight reds appealed after the Hunter brutes earlier in the day. The Brave New Wine Schadenfreude was the winner on this occasion. Bloody lovely
