Tracy's Garden
Tasted Monday, July 23, 2018 by galewskj with 278 views
What a lovely way to spend a summer evening than to drink some good wines while eating great food in a wonderful garden setting. Hats off to Tracy and her green thumb. My wine of the night would have to be either 2006 Taittinger Comtes or 2001 Suduiraut. If you can drink both of those in the same night, consider yourself lucky, and wisely overlook some of the crappier wines that people brought with good intentions (including me).
2016 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas Blanc 89 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District
This wine was once again nicely balanced and went very well in a garden setting. Unripe fruit and light.

France, Champagne
This wine was quite bold and true to form for Piper Heidsieck.

2012 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
This chablis definitely has more oak than I'm used to, even for a Grand Cru. Other than the oak, you still get that saline sea air quality, lemon oil and sea shells.

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Great minerality and laser acid precision.

2015 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard 91 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
This had a fair amount of oak and seemed bigger than any Rivers Marie chardonnay that I have had. It's also rather young. Maybe hold a year or two and try again?

2014 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 92 Points
USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
This is not my favorite style of chardonnay, but this is also probably the best Red Shoulder that I have tried. They seem to have dialed back their oak treatment and modernity with this wine. There is nice spice, an appropriate amount of oak, and it comes across more medium-bodied.
Side note - Shafer, if you are charging $50 for a bottle of wine, use a real cork, not a cork composite.
