An opportunity to try some Italian wines a little more off the beaten track than the normal Piemonte, Sicilian and Tuscan fayre.
Interesting tasting. Italy is so vast in wine making terms…and there is so much to learn. A more pleasant exercise might be to attempt to do Italy with the appropriate dishes/food for the wines…one to ponder. The Corvina and the Cigliegiolo were my picks on this occasion.
2016 Azienda Agricola Toblâr Ramato Venezia Giulia IGT
Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
Mineral; quite wet stone initially, cream, butter, a little muted spiced pear and pear skin. Savoury, textured, fruit a little muted on the palate. Hmm

Medium minus intensity aromas of white pepper, herbs, spice, tomato leaf. Savoury and sharp on the palate. Textured. Persistent. But it's a bit meh for me.

2017 Damiano Ciolli Cesanese di Olevano Romano Superiore Silene

Black tea, blood, a little wet hay and black cherry. On the palate it's sourly juicy with muted cherry and tongue coating, drying tannic grip. Meh.

2016 Il Paradiso (Manfredi) Toscana IGT
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Medium minus intensity aromas of maraschino cherry. In the moot it's all juicy cherry - though savoury not jubey - with silky tannins that are none the less drying. It's a bit short but perfectly pleasant.

2016 Giuseppe Campagnola Corte Agnella
Italy
Meaty, struck match, red berried fruit, a little liquorice. Juicy, mouth watering acidity, red berried fruit that the tannins embrace and coax on the medium plus length finish. Wonderfully balanced. Lovely.

2015 Sassotondo Ciliegiolo Maremma Toscana
Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana
Very slightly baked black hued fruit, slight sour cherry and berry, stony, earthy. Initially juicy, slightly warm fruit then a bucket load of savoury, meaty, unapologetically grippy, chalky, raspy tannins. Time but rather nice.

2016 Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina "Olé!"
Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Rosso di Valtellina
Medium minus aromas of jubey cherry, perhaps a tiny smidge of cork taint, Dried orange peel, the fruit is rather lost beneath drying gritty tannins, the acid persists. Not sure if it's flawed so benefit of the doubt. Time will help a clean bottle.
