Flight 1 - White (3 Notes)

  • 2016 Lagar de Costa Albariño Rías Baixas

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

    Tasted Blind

    A: Pale lemon green
N:Medium (+) nose. Pear, lemon rind, lime, chamomile, SALTED LEMON,
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, phenolic bitterness, medium (+) body, medium alcohol (13.5%), pronounced intensity and finish between medium (for most of room) and medium (+) for me.
C: Drink young. Good quality wine.

    Guesses:
Phenolic bitterness and salted lemon. Thought i might have gotten a little yeast too but the first two elements took me straight to Albarino from Rias Baixas...one of the coastal subregions (O Rosal or Val de Salnes) given the preponderance of salt.

  • 2015 Dirler-Cade Pinot Gris Schimberg

    France, Alsace

    Tasted Blind

A: Pale lemon with copper hues
N: Pronounced nose. Melon, pear, white flowers, little almond. Youthful
P: Off dry, high acid, medium (+) body, medium (+)/high alcohol (14%) but well integrated, medium (+) intensity and long finish.
C: Drink in next 3 years.

    Guesses:
As soon as i saw the copper hues in Lyndall's glass, i knew it was a Pinot Gris or Gewürztraminer. By the time i brought it two inches from my nose, i knew the white flowers and absence of roses meant this was Pinot Gris and not Gewürztraminer. Off dry and so Alsatian and not from Oregon. Easy peasy!

  • 2016 Domaine Guy Robin et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Tasted Blind

    A: Medium yellow
N: Vanilla, apple, starfruit, unripe pineapple, salt, wet stone, peach. Youthful
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, medium alcohol (13%), medium (+) intensity and a medium finish and body.
C: Integrated oak here, i suspect. Liked this one. BLIC? Good to very good quality wine. Could hold it 3 more years but drinking nicely now.

    Guesses:
I thought the apple might be of the yellow variety and if the starfruit is indeed present, this is a Chablis. Enough character for a premier cru

Flight 2 - Red (3 Notes)

  • 2014 Badine de la Patache

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Tasted Blind

    A: Deep ruby
N: Medium (+) nose. Vanilla, blackcurrant, STEWED PLUM, tobacco, green pepper, baking spice. earth, Developing
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, medium (+) tannin, body, intensity and medium finish. Medium alcohol (13%)

    Guesses:
the dominant plum element here took me to Merlot and the earthiness took me to old world. Seemed to be really obviously a right bank merlot based Bordeaux.

  • 2014 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Signature

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Tasted Blind

A: Deep ruby with high viscosity
N: Medium nose. SMOKED MEAT, black cherries, dried herbs, lavender, leather, potting soil and after a lot of time opening up.....black pepper.
P: Dry, full body, medium (+) acid, high alcohol, medium tannin, medium (+) intensity and long finish.
C: Very good quality. Drink in the next few years. The tannin doesn't seem built for distance.

    Guesses:
Ok, the black pepper, the warm climate character and acid put me in the Rhone. I thought it was more Syrah dominant given the pepper and color intensity. Guessed Northern Rhone Syrah

    Mistakes:
I missed the stewed strawberry which is key to identifying a CDP. Also, the viscosity indicated a warmer climate than Northern Rhone. Rookie error!

  • 2015 Elderton Shiraz

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    Tasted Blind

A: Deep ruby with purple at the edges
N: Medium nose. Blackberry, black cherry, eucalyptus and mocha.Baking spice and some blueberries (maybe) here. The fruit is overripe and dry.
P: Dry, high alcohol, medium (+) acid, intensity, finish, tannin and full body.
C: Very good quality. Can lay down but drinking well now.

    Guesses:
Argentine Malbec or Australian Shiraz. The eucalyptus put me in either of those countries and the black fruit and mocha leaned Malbec while the black and blue fruit suggested Shiraz. The purple highlights indicated either of these grapes. My final guess was Aussie Shiraz as there was enough eucalyptus concentration for it. I expect more in Aussie wines. The lack of black pepper and smoked meat was really odd and surprised Cauble said this was typical because what i was tasting in my glass didn't seem to be. Maybe it needed more time to open up.
