Introduction

as Mats and Fredrik very kindly offered to give me a hand back to the storage with all the Burgundies and the token ring-ins I quite literally had to force* them to try a bracket of Leoville Barton and Andre Brunel Les Cailloux. We parked ourselves on upturned empty storage boxes - I went first as the heaviest to demonstrate the safetyness before they would perch themselves and then we shared a glass of each wine peace pipe style as I only had five glasses at the storage...

*yeah, not that much force...

Flight 1 - Bracket one - Leoville Barton (7 Notes)

It was such a pleasure to share these with Mats and his son…we tasted until we agreed that the wines were straying into the 'too young' space which was surprisingly early. Pity about the 1982 - that will need to be tidied up soon.

  • 1982 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Muted black cherry and blackcurrant, leather; very gentlemen's club, earthy notes, a little cedar and a baked sweet spice note. Tending to volatile on the palate, the faded fruit is a little sharp, lacking tannins. Superb nose but exhausted palate.

  • 1994 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of leather, a little black cherry, crushed chalk with a smidge of damp cellar and pyrazine. The palate is a little tartly juicy with muted slightly unripe black fruits with, oddly , a little sweet peach.

  • 1995 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Dense, aged black berry over blackcurrant, leather, a little closed in fact, cedar, coffee spice. Juicy, fleshy, fruity but with plenty of tannic burr long. Really very good and in a great spot. Yumptious

  • 1996 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Ooh, this is beginning to smell a little like a 1990 Bordeaux to me; dark fruits, baked earth, leather, a little forest floor underpin, cedar, graphite, a little pyrazine. On the palate more time is required for me plenty of savoury black fruit and leathery, powdery, chalky textured tannins.

  • 1998 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of earth, blackberry and cherry, leather, cedar, slightly tobacco leaf. And this is equally muted on the palate, juicy with similar flavour profile to the nose and an odd peach note, tannins are drying and gritty. Time for me.

  • 1999 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Blackcurrant, leather, horse shit, cedar, a little forest floor funkiness. Juicy, leathery black fruit to the fore with plenty of tannic grip in support. Leather, cedar and farmyard provide the background. Hmm.

  • 2002 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Dense black hued fruit with a smidge of black olive, farmyard, liquorice, cedar, a little cream and caramel and a touch of pyrazine. On the palate the tannins are dominating things, the fruit a little muted. Pretty but time.

Flight 2 - Bracket two - Andre Brunel Les Cailloux (5 Notes)

Mats is a bit of a CndP fan so it seemed appropriate to introduce him to one of my favourite producers

Closing

An unplanned tasting on the day that the chaps had to fly home proved, for me, a very pleasant experience on all fronts. Jeez but the Leoville Bartons were very nice and the 1995 and 1996 were singing...
