Introduction

The theme for the night was the wines of Spain and the wines did not disappoint. Spain is a very diverse region so I was looking forward to trying many different grapes and regions. We also had some great food we made from the chicken with Spanish rice, a cheese board, BBQ chicken and taquitos as well as some delicious desserts.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2009 Bodegas Muga Rioja Selección Especial 93 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Tasted blind. Decanted for 2 hours prior to serving. Aromas of raspberry, cherry, earth and menthol. Flavors of raspberry, earth, tobacco and iron. Ends with a 30 second finish with cherry and tobacco notes. This was drinking better than the last time I had it but still not a blockbuster in my opinion. May be drinking at peak now but a long, long life ahead of this. I gave this 93 points and it was the wine of the night.

  • 2013 Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Pétalos 92 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

Tasted blind. The nose was a bit closed down at first but upon retasting, it had aromas of cherry, smoke and matchstick. Nose kind of was evolving as the night went on. Flavors of cherry, currant, a touch of plum and some earthiness. Ends with a 25 second finish with cherry notes. Once this came around it was drinking pretty well. Was difficult to tell this apart from the Rioja's because it had that similar Spanish earthiness. I gave this wine 92 points and it finished tied for 2nd.

  • 2014 Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Reserva 89 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Tasted blind. Aromas of vanilla, cherry and currant. The nose on this really stuck out because it was the only one with vanilla on it. Just different from the others. Got flavors of cherry, blackberry and plum. Ends with a 15-20 second finish with cherry notes. I initially liked this a bit more but after re-tasting and comparing to the other wines I downgraded it. Not a bad wine but just a notch below the other in my opinion.

  • 2015 Bodegas La Cana Albariño 90 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

Tasted blind. This had a aromas of mineral, apple, and citrus. Bit flinty as well. Flavors of apple, pear, mineral and slate. Ended with a 20 second finish. This reminded me of a dry Riesling in a way. Happy that I got the grape right on this one. Very nice Summer wine. I gave this 90 points and it finished 6th on the night.

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Tasted blind. Aromas of cherry, tobacco, raspberry and a bit gamey. Flavors of cherry, earth, blackberry and mineral. Ends with a 25 second finish with earthy notes. Wines 5 and 6 were very similar. The main difference was the age, which you could taste more in this wine. I gave this 91 points and it finished tied for 4th.

Closing

Well the wines were more similar than different tonight, with 4 of them being tempranillo and 3 of those hailing from Rioja. With that being said, the first wine we tried, the Muga, stoke out from the other wines in my opinion although they were all solid wines. Until next time!
