Introduction

From time to time our friend Loek dives into his wine cellar and than he finds some superb bottles. Saskia makes wonderful cooking at the same high level as the wines.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1991 Domaine Frédéric Mochel Muscat Altenberg de Bergbieten 93 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Very, very refined, the acidity is very subtle, gentle fruit and a whiff of caramel. You even smell a nice bitterness; although the wine doesn't like to have real power, it stays in your mouth with its superb balance. A nearly 28 year old Muscat. Bravo Frédérick Mochel. Bravo Loek too!

  • 2007 Bret Brothers Pouilly-Fuissé En Carementrant 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

A golden colour, nutty, a hint of speculaas, some glycerine, pure and refreshing bitters. At day 2 the wine had more to offer in the midtaste.
The wine is ripe and the acidity is still sound and lively; the finish is balanced.

  • 2005 Domaine de Peyre Rose Coteaux du Languedoc Marlène N°3 93 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc

The mix of 50% syrah and 50% grenache is integrated that it is very difficult to recognize one of the cépages separately. You can fool me saying it is a super merlot. Lovely, deep, red colour and ripe red fruit in the bouquet and the taste; a whiff of roasted wood, Everything is balanced including the lovely bitters and the noticeable, but ripe tannins. The wine misses however some complexity for more points.

  • 1990 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From a half bottle, the colour was a bit brown with a hint of pink.
The bouquet had a bit of mint, some caramel and showed a bit tired.
A very soft taste without friendly edges. Light, friendly, also tasty, but modest.

  • 1870 Eschenauer Fine Champagne Cognac 95 Points

    France, Cognac, Fine Champagne Cognac

A firm dose of caramel, a very friendly spiciness, very classic (of course) in its style with recognizable alcohol, good tannins, but also smooth. This cognac fills the mouth for a long time; 94 points for its qualities and one for surviving so gently.

  • 1967 Domaine Familial L. Dupont Calvados Pays d'Auge 93 Points

    France, Normandy, Calvados Pays d'Auge

Dark colour, very pure bouquet and taste, refined and with the apple in the core. This Calvados was able to show its qualities after the 1870 Eschenauer Fine Champagne Cognac.

  • NV Paul Dethune Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Prestige Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Dégorgement 10-2009; extremely pure; although 50/50% chardonnay/pinot noir for me the chardonnay was slightly dominant, perfect mousse, not a very long aftertaste, but it is the purity that marks this champagne.

  • 2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Very elegant combination of new wood and vanilla with flowers above. The taste is very pure and refined till the finish, but the length of the aftertaste could be a bit longer. During one hour of tasting the wine didn't change.

  • 2015 Cardinale 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Loek always knows to surprise me with a very good Californian wine. This time the Cardinale 2015; a deep colour, at the rim still a bit purple, some roasted wood, lovely bitters and, due to its youth, still a bit hefty.
The acidity keeps the wine very digestible and with its firm and already balanced (after)taste there is a very good future for this wine.

  • 1973 Château Cheval Blanc 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A fragile colour with a bit brown, but still lively; the bouquet is fantastic with subtle higher acidity, soft tones of red fruit, sound bitters, leather, some cedar and everything in balance, at the right place and with an aftertaste that continues. This super refined wine is at the age of nearly 46 years and comes from a modest vintage. For its qualities I give this wine (level upper shoulder) 94 points and one point extra for giving such a joy at high age.

  • 1995 Quinta do Vesuvio Porto Vintage 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

I recognized the, for me, slightly roasted wood style of Quinta do Vesuvio. This Port has the power of a real good vintage, but it is 'only' '95. Lots of power combined with a fresh backbone; the alcohol is noticeable. Still quite young, so there is time for further maturation.

Closing

The most spectacular wine was the Cheval Blanc '73, so super elegant, fragile and yet persistent.
