the selection was meant to be based on wines that don't have a good reputation in the modern world…
nom nom nom lovely company, lovely wine…except the Chambourcin that was awful. I'm not sure that all of these would qualify as wines of ill repute though.
2017 Bodegas Aizpurua Getariako Txakolina
Spain, País Vasco, Getariako Txakolina
Prickly fizzed citrus, freshy juicy, tangy, a little course tannic burr, citric; grapefruit and lemon, slightly saline. Only 11% but finishes a little warm. Interesting.

2017 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie
France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie
Lemon, slightly cheesy, saline. In the mouth it's fresh, citrus, saline texture with a long, mineral driven, finish. It's fairly straightforward but still very pleasant

2011 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Toast, butter, apple, lemon zest, fresh grass…wonderful acid line, less lemon zest on the palate but the toast, butter and grass notes are there. Long. Tangy. Lovely. Just lovely.

2018 Andrew Thomas Wines Sémillon Murphy's Vineyard
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of lemon, slight stone fruit and almost tropical fruit notes backed by some floral top notes. In the mouth though it's dry with fresh fruit but really quite flat and, almost, dead oddly enough. Nah.

2016 David & Nadia Pinotage Siebritskloof
South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Slightly jubey whole bunch married to slight rubber and sour black cherry with a dusty note. Juicy acid, slightly sour, similar in taste to what the palate implies though that rubber note is absent and replaced by a more mineral/stony tang. Silky but quite mouth coating tannins. Hmm.

2017 Lourens Family Howard John
South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Whole bunch, jubey and perfumed red fruits and a little black pepper. In the mouth it's juicy, red berry, feels a little alcoholically warm with slight herbaceous notes and it finishes very peppery on this occasion. I do like this wine though. I really should try it with the Gros and Tollot Minervois for comparisons sake...

2010 Morris Cinsault Blue Imperial
Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen
A little reductive, slightly meaty/gamey, black fruits, plums, and a surprising stone fruit note. Vanilla oak, a little plain chocolate…with time in the glass that reductive quality begins (but doesn't fully) dissipate and some tertiary leather and earth notes start to show. Woof! On the palate it's a beast. Plenty of alcohol, baked plums and apricot, quiet extracted with plenty of vanilla oak tannins, it's a touch too roided for me.

1999 Calais Estate Chambourcin Reserve
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Wood glue, dusty, earthy spice, VA, toast, leather alcohol heat, a little peppery, a little raspberry. Oooh, in the mouth it's sharply acidic, sour and foxy, chalky tannins. Ugh.

2000 Parker Coonawarra Estate Terra Rossa First Growth
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Lovely eucalyptus, blackcurrant, plums, cedar, a little leather, sweet spice with a smidge of cream on the nose. In the mouth it's juicy with red and blackcurrant, a touch eucalyptus, some baked plum and a little plain chocolate. Very slightly gritty but lightweight tannins and quite a lot of alcohol warmth. Went well with steak though.

1973 The Rothbury Estate Shiraz
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
A little muted red fruit and dusty pepper backed by coffee, leather, smoky notes, a rocky minerality and an odd fishiness. In the mouth it was juicy and fresh, lightweight, that slight fish note translates to the palate as well with a smidge of red fruit and a touch of non-intrusive alcohol on the medium plus length finish. Nice - that fishy note withstanding.

NV Primo Estate Joseph Sparkling Red
Australia, South Australia
Creamy mousse, red berry backed by blackberry, vanilla, cinnamon, a little yeastiness lends brioche and doughnut for me. On the palate it's juicy, fresh with a similar fruit and oak profile and some alcohol warmth lending a little breadth. Rather pleasant.
