France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A pretty solid bottle of chardonnay. Shows good weight and a good amount of intensity with pleasant fruitiness. A very minute amount of oak on the nose.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
So much raw potential here. Almost a Coche-like intensity on the nose (sans reduction) and palate, with restrained acidity that is rounded rather than bracing. Somehow has a silky texture.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Raw power and intensity here, with layered intensity on the palate. Lots of red fruit and juiciness and not anywhere as ornery as I would have thought a young Musigny could be.
Very well done. Ripe but not with fruit that is over the top. Still fairly structural with good cut. A hint of oak on the finish adds a spicy touch, but doesn't otherwise detract from the wine. Excellent stuff (and I preferred this to the red).
A little simple, but amply enjoyable pinot noir showing a nice hint of perfumed red fruit and some spice. Easygoing on the palate, without anything prickly.
A little underwhelming here; there's nice sweetness to the fruit and a pleasant red-tinted profile, but the palate shows some astringency and feels a little unintegrated.
A pretty backwards wine, true to the village, but not particularly charming at this point. Has a slight dirty element on the nose, and some pretty hard tannins right now. Probably better with time.
Brilliant stuff, one of my favourites today. Juicy red fruit without too much of that ditzy crunchiness that is so en vogue these day. Good breadth and density on the palate, and plenty of upside aging potential.
Sweet, slightly creamy, but full-bodied and rich, with generous dosage and a pretty strong autolytic note. Quite delicious, but shares the price point with several stronger contenders (mostly Krug Grande Cuvee).
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
First time with this producer (I think F. Magnien has coloured my impression of the last name), but this is certainly better than my F. Magnien impressions. Red fruit with just a hint of earthiness; seems to highlight the village quite nicely. Lighter on the palate, but not watery or dilute. Quite nice. I'll be on the lookout for more.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Fairly backwards, with a bit of smokiness on the nose. Seems to see a touch of oak, but it's not overdone. Pretty representative of the village, but not too charming right now.
From magnum, laid in chalk cellars in 2014, disgorged 2019. A little sweet and creamy relative to other experiences with this wine, but there's a really good amount of complexity on this "entry level" wine.
Pretty good stuff here; a little yeasty and bready and showing some ripe and slightly browned fruits, but somehow this still maintains a pleasant acidity.
Excellent showing of this wine today, with a really rich texture that is almost a little out of the ordinary for a blanc de blancs. Showing a little sweetness, this was a pretty nice showing.
Yeah, I think this is a better wine than the 2006 (perhaps a controversial opinion?). A bit bracing and showing some tart citrus notes, but classic chardonnay that does have enough body and doesn't come across as thin.
Apparently Jadot is building some winemaking facilities in Chablis, as they start amping up their Chablis lineup. This shows a really nice salinity, with a slightly waxier texture than expected. I wish this had a little more mineral cut.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
Pretty impressive. Shows some of the big waxy textures as Corton-Charlemagne, but at a mere fraction of the price. A very slight spicy oak thing on the nose but not out of place. Very good value.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
Not the famed NSG site, of course. Really great value, showing very pleasant red fruit but also a rustic earthiness and good complexity, especially at the level and price point.
Perhaps already starting to shut down a little bit, this seems a little ornery already, with some rustic tannins and thinning fruit. Seems to have good material on the back end for some aging though.
Easygoing and balanced, this is straightforward but really delicious. Not complex, but somehow more drinkable than a lot of other champagnes at this price range.
Fairly lean on the nose and palate, with a slight green streak too. Again not complex, and certainly a little fuller on the palate than the 2018 Bourgogne.
Generally have been liking how the 2017s have been shaping up. This has a pronounced salinity and a slightly waxy texture that is nicely balanced by acidity.
Impressive richness and body here, with a slightly waxy sweetness counterbalanced by some fresh acids. The nose shows a slight bit of really enjoyable popcorn-like reduction too.
I didn't like this as much as the 2014 Vinzelles, find this a little fatter and riper, without the acidic chardonnay cut that I expect. The fruit is sweet and there's a slightly alcoholic headiness here.
Very expressive with lots of beautiful red fruit that shows a little sweetness on the palate. Sappy and grippy, with light tannins on the finish. Great value.
Plentiful spice on the nose, some of it brown spice from the oak. Overall, the oak use is pretty restrained here, and there's impressive concentration and depth. Needs time to mature, but pretty delicious already.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Monthélie 1er Cru
A little stinky on the nose, but otherwise quite intense. The palate is less so, showing some earthiness and some tart red fruits. Thinning off on the finish but quite good for the appellation.
Really impressive for the appellation, showing a really intense juiciness and lovely freshness. Bright red fruit that is a little crunchy. Not too complex on the palate, but lovely and very approachable.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Library release. Very good, with a slight amount of dirtiness here that isn't out of place. The right amount of acids for 2001, but also more fruit and depth than I would have expected -- there's a hint of sweetness here even.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
This wine has never wowed me. This vintage of it is no exception; it's a perfectly fine wine, but always lacks anything compelling to say -- it doesn't taste quite like Nuits, nor does it have the awesomeness of even the base Mugnier Chambolle. Right now, this shows some nice red fruit and has a bit of juiciness, but the finish is a little bitter.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
I hadn't seen the vintage on this and thought it was pretty stemmy and thin on the palate. Definitely shows a bit green, but there's perhaps a little more body on this than you would otherwise expect for this terrible vintage.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Smoky nose. Clearly a product of the vintage with a thinness that is incorrect for the level of the wine, and a serious sense of unripeness and greenness.
