Introduction

We gathered at Bullion on a Tues for a night of great food, wine and company. MK worked with Julie Braunstein (sommelier) for a nice selection of wines to go with the small dishes and meals. As usual, the food, wine, and service were stellar. Fantastic evening for everyone.

Flight 1 - Whites (4 Notes)

The champagne was the starter for oysters. With other appetizers, came out the savagnin and savennieres. Excellent matches with the food.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 Notes)

These came out to match our entrees.

  • 2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Upon opening, beautiful rich fresh ripe black cherry greet the nose first, followed by green stems, baking spices that become more oak spices with air. Palate also had nice red cherries, green stems, some earth. Very primary but the density and concentration of flavors married with elegance were all present, teasing at the great things to come with age. But over the next 1-1.5 hours, the wine shut down hard. Aromas of mostly green stems, herbs, brambles, tart red cherries/cranberries and earth. Palate was all acid, green stems and prominent tannins that was hidden initially by the fruit. We knew if was way too early to drink this but now very much know. But will be beautiful when this is mature but just too young now. 93 for aromas and 91 for palate at the initial outset.

  • 1995 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits St. Georges Les Poisets 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

The last vintage that Robert Arnoux made per Julie (sommelier). The wine was a roller coaster of ride with an initial high, then a shut down period, then to re-emerge again over a 2.5 hour period. Initially, beautiful rich, ripe cherry and earth aromas that was matched by the palate with a nice concentration and acids. The wine then shut down with not much except for very tart cherries, tannins, and a band-aid aromas and taste. When the wine re-emerged, more complex aromas of cherries, some green stems and herbs and a nice sous bois. Palate was similar to the aromas with moderate tannins on the mid-palate. A pleasure to drink from this point.

  • 1998 Château Nenin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Sold to the owners of Leoville Las Cases in 1998. Beautiful and poised aromas of cedar, leather, spices, currants and plums with a bit of eucalyptus on the end. Elegant and mellow palate of currants, plums, leather, earth and brambles. Moderate tannins on the midpalate leading to an earthy finish that gently fades away. Excellent and my WOTN. 93+

Flight 3 - Dessert (1 Note)

Had the Baumard with an assortment of desserts that were shared.

  • 1967 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru 93 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

Decanted for 1h. Aromas of rich honeyed pears, honeyed Meyer lemons, cinnamon and other baking spices. Palate was not as sweet as the aromas, more along the lines of a demi-sec. Ripe apples, just ripe pears, hint of vanilla, nice bitter pith that brings balance. Nice finish of medicinal fruit. Complex and lovely. 93+

Closing

So much learned tonight in regards to the wine. DRC showed so much promise but was so young. Most had the Prevost and Ch. Nenin as their favorite wines, which I wholeheartedly agreed.
