Introduction

Tasting of JJ Prum wines, trying to understand the differences between 2 vineyards and 3 pradikat levels

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2018 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    9% alc
The nose shows high intensity, candied fruit, candied lemon, tropical friuit, lime, pineapple, mango, reductive notes, flint.
The wine is light and airy in the palate, with medium acidity, feels sweet but balanced, green “prickly” freshness, ripe and candied tropical and stone fruit, some bitter notes too in the medium finish

  • 2018 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    8.5%
The wine shows more reduction/rubber notes than the Kabinett to the point that I can’t find any fruit underneath (tried the wine again hour later that day and it had opened up nicely).
In the palate, the wine shows freshness but a heavier feeling and character than the Kabinett. The wine is a bit earthy, with medium to high acidity, candied stone and citrus fruit, medium body and finish.
    90 for now

  • 2018 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    7.5%
The wine is showing reduction again but not as much as the Spätlese, citrus fruit in the back, green lemon leaves, lime, pineapple, there is a beautiful exotic nuance here.
In the palate, the wine is very light, almost ethereal, what feels like medium acidity, there is a bit of CO2 here (which wasn’t there hours later), the wine shows medium to long finish

  • 2018 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    9.5
The wine is bolder in the nose than the Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett, ripe citrus, lemon with a few earthy notes.
In the palate, the wine shows strength and much higher complexity than the Gr. Himmel, the acidity is more powerful and the wine overall more balanced. Flavor wise the wine is all about citrus, lemon and lime, the wine shows medium body and finish.
    Outstanding

  • 2018 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

The wine shows high intensity and complexity in the nose, ripe tropical fruit, citrus, stone fruit, a nice green leaf freshness, utterly balanced, ripe green apple, smooth, elegant and powerful.
In the palate the wine shows power with a strong presence of herbs and especially fresh tea leaves and sage (which caught me off guard), lemon, lime, citrus fruit, apple and pear, high enough acidity to balance the sweetness, medium body and long finish.
Outstanding quality. I have to buy cases of this
