Introduction

Tobi invited us for a real wine inferno to Berens am Kai. All flights were served blindly. there were so many highlights.

Flight 1 - Opener (1 Note)

Guessed right

Flight 2 - Warm-up (1 Note)

A reluctant Montrachet

  • 2011 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet Domaine 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    blind
guessed GC Burgundy 2013 or 2017, still very young, very accessible, oak well inegrated, lean, some vanilla but not annoying or overwhelming, saline, few popcorn, fresh and a hint of roasted aromas. 95-96

Flight 3 - Giant Champagne Flight (2 Notes)

Both in perfect condition

  • 1979 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 99 Points

    France, Champagne

    blind
close to perfection, fine bubbles, fresh, cracking aciidty, still not at his end from this perfect bottle, beginning caramell and toffee, but not too much, biscuity with lemon tarte, utterly elegant and balanced. Great power in the finish. I guessed vintage 1981 but after knowing it is 1979 Cristal could be the "only" answer.

  • 1982 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 98 Points

    France, Champagne

    blind
I was sure it was Clos du Mesnil 1982 that I had one month ago. An almost perfect wine. Powerful, Krug perfume, dried fruits, hazelnuts, honey, biscuit roll, fine bubbles and utterly long finish. Pure and concentrated. Same rating as the CdM 82. 98-99. The Cristal 79 in this flight was at the same level.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

Kirchenstück was the winner

  • 2004 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bâtard-Montrachet 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    blind
I guessed Burgundy, cracking acidity, popcorn, some grren notes, some vanilla and hazelnut aromas. In the same flight with Kirchenstück 2004. Very balanced, close to his peak. 96

  • 2004 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Kirchenstück Riesling 97 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

    blind
I guessed German Riesling from 2001. I had this wine at least 10 times. Today in perfect condition. I call this wine the German Montrachet but thi time more Riesling typical with not that much hazelnut notes. Not too sweet. Great balance, at least 5-8 years ahead. 97

Flight 5 - Keller (2 Notes)

Abtserde really strong

Flight 6 - Red Burgundy (2 Notes)

Flight 7 - The immortal Lafite (2 Notes)

Flight 8 - Califoria rules (2 Notes)

  • 1974 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello 96 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    blind
for me a bit too evolved for a 74 but with great great acidity and tannin structure. Black currant still present and some ethereal notes not that explosive as Marha's vineyard. In same with 1984 I preferred a touch the latter one. At his peak. Other at the table rated 74 with higher points (till 100). 96

  • 1984 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello 97 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    blind
I guessed California but has no hint to producer or vintage. I preferred it against the famous 74 in the same flight. It is fresher with more primary notes and a great balance. Doesn't reach his peak. 97

Flight 9 - A dream flight (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 99 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    blind
I guessed Bordeaux, close to perfection, so fresh, pepper, dark cherries, black currant, vivid acidity, ripe firm tannins, at his peak. Fantastic length and precision. For me it outscored the La Turque same vintage narrowly. 99-100

  • 1989 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 98 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    blind
Compared to Chave's Hermitage 1989 it is more fruit dominated and "sexier", great oriental spicieness, and not at his end but reached his peak. 98+
