Introduction

Virtual tasting, with our group meeting in advance and sharing the same 15 wines.

Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Engaging Vosne-styled aromas of red cherry and Chinese five spice. Similar flavors, but less complex and clearly on the leaner side. No further upside, but certainly very good now.

  • 2006 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Ripe start with good depth, also very Vosne-styled with red cherry and baking spice. Palate is more foursquare, somewhat awkward and lacking the textural dexterity the nose implied. Finishes slightly bitter. Good enough, but slightly disappointing.

  • 2009 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Ripe red cherry and berry start-to-finish that is very fresh, still firm in the middle. Very good length. Upside from here.

  • 2010 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. My star of the vertical. Bright red cherry and berry aromas with engaging savory spice. Even more complex flavors, with a bit of black cherry in the mix as well. Slightly less powerful than the 2009, but so beautifully composed and harmonious. Good now through the next couple of decades.

  • 2001 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Mature red cherry throughout with earth and woodsy spice. Good depth, better balance. Less bright vs last time tasted a few years back, but this was still a charming aged Burgundy.

  • 2011 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Red cherry and savory spice with earth hints in front, followed by lots of unfolding nuance just behind. Good weight and length, better balance. Better now vs when last tasted (at the domain, just before release), this is at its peak but should drink well for at least another decade.

  • 2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Ripe, powerful, so complex, and perfectly balanced. Everybody’s WOTN. ‘Nuff said.

  • 2013 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In vertical. Black and red cherry comes across as ripe and powerful, especially for the vintage, well supported with very savory spice. Still slightly backward when initially tasted after open 3 hours, this was even more charming when finished a few hours later. A great 2013.

  • 1990 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Ripe black fruit still nicely fresh, but somewhat one-dimensional. Slightly lacking Grand Cru density to me. Still, very tasty.

  • 2005 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Huge and powerful black and red cherry with roasted meat. Clearly lots here, but still very firm and backward, even 10 hours after it was opened. Enjoyable now, I am very optimistic here, but will not want to try this again for at least 5 more years. Probably better 2030 forward.

  • 2001 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Smelled great when opened at 4:30, but tired when finally tasted at 7:45. What started as woodsy, later seemed dirty. I will pop-and-pour my remaining bottles.

  • 2002 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Angular and lacking freshness vs previous bottles from 5+ years ago. Enjoyable enough when tasted around 8pm, completely uninteresting a few hours later. Another wine I would pop-and-pour, but thankfully this was my last bottle.

  • 2004 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Spice-driven aromas seem very Vosne styled with mature red fruit. Palate is leaner and less enticing, but still a success for 2004.

  • 2005 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

In contrast to the Prieur 2005, this is fully open and accessible, but lacking the same gravitas. Enjoyable red fruit with faint spice, but lacking Grand Cru character to me.

  • 2010 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru

Line many Hudelot-Noellat 2010s, the cork was fairly soaked through, and this seemed older than a 2010. Mature red cherry start-to-finish, supplemented with mushroom notes and good+ overall balance and textures. Served as a bonus mystery wine in our Clos Vougeot tasting, this held its own. Given cork concerns, best to enjoy before 2025.
