Introduction

Nice to back in the saddle with this group again. This was the usual theme of bring a good bottle of something. We had a fun group of 8 including Luis, Dan, Brian, James & Carrie, Joe and Jason plus me. Also good to be back at Tilia for the first time since the late Fall patio season.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2008 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 20 minutes. This had a pleasant toast, bright pear, a little almond, crystalline minerality while being rather suave and balanced. Maybe not quite at the level of the brilliant '02, but maybe with time it will get there. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2010 Dom Pérignon Champagne 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale to light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. First time having the '10 Dom. A touch slower out of the gate, but buildS pretty fast, lychee, tart apple, lemongrass, toast, guava, chalk and wet stones with a tacit tartness. Though obviously young and a little flashy, this should flesh out nicely with a couple years. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2011 Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Light gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 45 minutes. Exquisite nose of Meyer lemon, orange peel, limestone, sea breeze and lovely purity. The palate carries it all forward with finesse and grace, showing medium body, oyster shell minerality and excellent balance. This was in a perfect spot and stood out as a classically restrained burg.

  • 2016 Sine Qua Non Deux Grenouilles 92 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

Light gold color. Drank a glass side by side with a white burg and a Cali chard - done because of menu limitations. Tropical, full bodied, ripe, green and leafy, lychee, mango, very tropical, vanilla, creamy texture, herbaceous and flashy with ripe sweet toned fruit. Reminds me of the lyric, "not really sure how I feel about you, but something in the way you move". Well maybe, but it does get your attention while perhaps trying to be a little too needy. I had to leave this to the end of the flight to stay out of the way of the chards. This bottle was more impressive than the previous one.

  • 2011 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over an hour in a flight with an '11 Drouhin CdelaG and a Sine Qua Non Deux Grenouilles. Normally I'm a big Aubert fan, but tonight this came off over the top for me. Drinking it side by side with the '11 Drouhin I found myself mesmerized by the purity and refinement of the Drouhin. On another night I might have been totally enamoured by the Aubert. The stylistic differences were dramatic. I guess my bias was showing. Rich, full bodied, ultra ripe and layered, tropical, plenty of oak, round and plump, pear, with some tangerine and lemon added to the palate.

  • 1986 Château Montrose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very dark red color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Totally agree with vanpe003's take, I've had several great bottles of '86 Montrose, this one was good, not great. There's a lot of leather here, a little volatility, tart cherry, tart black currant, lots of pencil, soil, very earthy on the palate, adding plum and a chewy firmness to the tannins. Very good, but not as expressive and nuanced as the best bottles. 92+pts.

  • 2002 Vieux Château Certan 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Very dark red color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Nicely perfumed on the nose, dark raspberries, dried spices, minerals and gravel, with round tannins that still have some life.. Nice bottle.

  • 2000 Château Pavie Decesse 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 2 hours, drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. I hadn't had this wine for 8 years, and back then it impressed with some very long decants of 5 to 6 hours. I think tonight's bottle needed that kind of decant as well. Still tightly wound and a bit oaky. This was dense with dark chocolate, black fruits, deep and concentrated, tart black currants, firm tannins, plenty of oak, and some volatility to boot. The length is there for sure, and we've seen where this can get to. 91(+)pts.

  • 1990 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Dark gold color. Drank a small glass over 30 minutes. Tropical fruits, pineapple, shaved toasted coconut, pineapple, ripe baked apples, apricot, honey, orange zest, medium bodied, good acid to sweetness and spice balance. Excellent, loved it - really a super mix of age and maturity while still being lithe and featherweight. 94+pts.
