Introduction

Another lively and informative tasting with67's italian somms, this focussing on the Rocche di Castiglione cru. They say that Monfortino is the Romanee Conti of Barolo, and Rocche di Castiglione is Chambertin Clos de Beze.
In the commune of Castiglione Faletto, this is a 16.33 Hectare vineyard with Helvetian sandstone-based soils. southeast facing and a warm amphitheater at 30-40m altitude. The vineyard makes floral, herbal and spicy aromatics with controlled power and is generally a 20-30 year wine.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2016 Oddero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Aged in large botte for 30 months. Medium-light body, plenty of floral aromatics and red fruit. Fine raspy tannins, plenty of acidity. Ripe red fruits, this smells ripe and fuller than it actually is, some Chinese five spice.

  • 2016 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Rocche di Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Aged in big botte for 26 months. the vines are 50-60 years old. Medium to light body, cherry and violet nose, more red fruit, plentiful fine tannins which cost your mouth. Clean and crunchy fruit, a little truffle and blackcurrant leaf. Lighter and fresher than the Oddero

  • 2016 Monchiero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

24 months in big botte. A little darker in colour, still medium body, quite a lovely colour. Ripe and rounded fruit, dark cherry, red currant, glides across the palate nicely, the tannins are fine, you can feel them around your gums, but they are cushioned by the fruit, very good definition of fruit, star anise and a mineral finish, very classy and lovely length. I brought a few bottles of this during the tasting it was that good.

  • 2016 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Rocche di Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

There are only 4m between the Monchiero plot and the Brovia plot who harvest a little later. A little sour fruit and redcurrant nose. Ripe cherry, plum, violet, nice clarity of fruit, fine tannins which sneak up on you. Sweeter fruit here with nice length.

  • 2016 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Bricco Rocche

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Biodynamic, the smallest MGA in Barolo at 1.36 hectares with multiple aspects and more akin to Villero. this was once the most expensive wine in Italy. 36 months in big bottle. A different fruit profile here, light body, fresh and crisp, tannins prick the front of the tongue. very long with noticeable salinity on the nose and palate.

  • 2016 Luigi Oddero Barolo Rocche Rivera

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

An extension of Rocche di Castiglione but with very similar soils. Darker in colour than the other wines, light body, clean red cherry fruit and fresh earth, bright acidity. The tannins are well structured and cost the inside of your mouth, there is a tough of orange zest here, quite austere
