  • The 2016 Rocche di Castiglione was a dark, dense Barolo. It was pretty formidable at this early stage, seemingly shut down and showing little beyond its structure. I’d hold on these for several years to get a better glimps at the wine’s full potential.

  • Red fruit, bacon, mushroom, iron on the nose. Velvety mouthfeel. Agree with others that this is very tight at the moment and feels even more backward than many other 16 Barolo I’ve had at this stage.

After a few hours of being opened, some earthy aromas start to show up and a majestically firm tannin structure. Lovely transparency with a sweet and sour cherry character on the finish.

On day 2, some tea components come through to mix with the red fruit. Hard to decipher at this stage so you find yourself picking through various elements in isolation to find the complexity. Significant room for upside in score. Generally speaking, as common wisdom dictates, these 2016s are significantly more backward than their 2015 siblings and not drinking as enjoyably today.

  • feels too early for a rating but we did love this... good sense of underlying red fruit and some spices, nice structure but not as much as it could have been, med+ acidity and med++ tannin... feels like this wine deserves 15 years for age at least, but less unapproachable than barolos from a decade or two ago... I'm guessing 93/94 potential

  • Reds, purples, blues.... super lifted and perfumed, with copious spice and floral notes, this is absolutely gorgeous. Plums, cherries, red roses, violets, licorice, cola, cinnamon, cedar, clay, mushrooms.... Firm but hinting at the silkiness to come, this is very elegant and fresh for a powerful young Barolo. Long and lithe finishing with a wife spectrum of flavors from tart cranberry to dark rich spice. Love it. Save it. This is a pleasure today but it will be best in 5 to 10, and be worth following another decade or two after that. One of my fave in all Barolo, this is always a seductive beauty.

  • The Barolo Boys: Rocche di Castiglione Cru Special with Frederico Mocca & Nelson Bari (67@Home Zoom Tasting): Aged in large botte for 30 months. Medium-light body, plenty of floral aromatics and red fruit. Fine raspy tannins, plenty of acidity. Ripe red fruits, this smells ripe and fuller than it actually is, some Chinese five spice.
