Introduction

Wine Pages offline organised by Graeme.

3 flights of 2010 Barolos covering a range of styles

We had some initial Langhe sparklings (Alta Langa, Marcalberto) and a lovely Sauternes (2007 Château Guiraud) to finish

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    First Barolo of the night

Nose of freshly laid road, a little tomato leaf, strawberry, kirsch, an expensive perfume note, oud perhaps?

Palate of dried cherry, some Parma violet, tannins kicks in but still delicious.

  • 2010 Azelia Barolo Margheria 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

While the Marcarini was a freshly laid road, this is an old country lane.
Nose of dusty tar, dried cherry. Quite elevated notes. A little incense - reminds me of church. Nelson said chalky and I get that.

Palate brings light red plum, really juicy, mouth filling but light bodied at the same time. Great balance

  • 2010 Massolino Barolo Margheria 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

More advanced on the nose than anything so far. Animale, game, soy sauce, some iodine

Delivers on the nose with dried plum, liquorice, umami, despite seeming prettt advanced still fairly tannic on the finish.

Not without its charms and understand there is quite a bit of bottle variation here

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    First of flight number 2

Nose of light tar and rose. Tomato leaf. Balsamic. Red cherry. Some cloves. Beautiful elegant perfume.

Palate is in a word delicious - sour red cherry, a little black tea. Treads a great balance between elegance and intensity.

  • 2010 Giovanni Canonica Barolo Paiagallo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Gosh this was good

Gorgeous nose, furniture polish (in a good way). Beautifully floral perfume. Supremely elegant

Palate gives up sour cherry, violets - really delicious with a rich juicy mouthfeel and a long velvety finish. Lovely with the food too.

I understand that these bottles can be a bit of a crap shoot so was pleased to have such a great experience here

  • 2010 Monchiero Barolo Montanello Riserva 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

I’m a fan of this producer following the 67PM Barolo Boys tasting

Nose has red currant, ripe plum, some lovely mineral notes.

Palate of crunchy red currant. Some old oak. Grippy tannins.

Another good wine from this producer though hard to find in the U.K.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Brooding nose of dark plum, tomato, animale. Quite savoury.

Palate delivers the savouriness but with a light watery (in a good way) body. For me this is wonderfully balanced.

  • 2010 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Cannubi 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Gorgeous nose. Vanilla sweetness makes this quite the standout from the others in the flight (and night). Fruit is very primary with a lovely bright red cherry

Palate delivers the juicy red fruit and the sweetness. Quite a different proposition from all the other wines of the night but for me an appealing one as the oak doesn’t overpower. This feels like it could develop a lot further too

  • 2010 Mauro Veglio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Lovely nose. Wonderfully floral. Reminds me of violet Trumper shaving foam with a hint of mint.

Nose maintains the wonderful floral quality, a little iodine, full body, but the tannins kick in.
