Introduction

Upon opening, all of the 5 Burgundies were quite reductive. All wines were double decanted, and also sat in the glass for a while. Luckily, no corked wines, Im on a roll, cant remember the last incorrect bottle, surely my luck is running thin now..
Wow, what a set of wines, a lot of contrasts and a LOT of quality. Annoyingly, the most expensive was the most profound wine, but the Mazis stood out as an excellent wine, especially considering the price.

  • 2010 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Double decanted 2h prior to dinner.

The nose is so deep and alluring. Dark profile, blackberries and forest floor. There was a subtle wood element on the nose that I found extremely attractive, pine needles was the closest I got to an actual scent.
The palate was quite different from the nose. Whereas the nose was a bit dark and mysterious, the palate was bright and cool, so focused and clean/precise. Medium bodied, sour cherry was the most prominent component. The finish is long, carried by the same sour cherries and spices.

The more I came back to this, the more I fell in love with the nose. Stunning!

  • 2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Double decanted 2h before dinner.

Enormously deep nose, yet so bright in character. This is just mind boggling complex, yet light on its feet. Difficult to pin down exact scents, but there are definitely a lot of berries here (crowberry, morell, lingonberry) and a freshness of premium vanilla and maybe a touch of cola.

The wine embodies the meaning of silky mouthfeel. Sweet, it covers the whole mouth, yet never jammy. An almost endless finish, bitter in character. That a wine can be so concentrated and deep while maintaining an impeccable elegance is beyond me..

The palate was at its best the first two hours in the glass, I don't believe it needs more cellaring. Stupendous wine..!

  • 2016 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Double decanted 4h prior to dinner.

The nose was not very accessible for me on this night. The first two hours it felt very understated, dark, but shy. Later on this night, blackberries, crushed rock, sweet strawberries, wood and juniper emerged. The others around the table really loved this, I guess I wasnt fully on its wavelenght on this night.

The palate was medium bodied. Fruity and also minerality. Long understated and dry finish.

This wine kept growing through the night, becoming more interesting to me as well. It just did not bring the intensity I was expecting, also the MG Ruchottes was a tough act to follow..

91 points the first time around, 94 at the end of dinner.

  • 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Double decanted 4h before dinner.

Good depth, tar, violets, rose stems, very sour cherries. A bit rustic compared to the wines preceding it.

Dry, huge fruit concentration with great acidity. The finish felt a bit short, but this is still a baby.
Great potential here, not a crime to open one now, but if you have limitied supplies, I would wait a few years.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2016 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Double decanted 4h before dinner

Huge nose, complex and deep. Wood and a hint of reductive aromas. Candied nuts, heather, wild strawberries.

Surprisingly, no feel of tannins, silky smooth and juicy. Sweet and bitter, some really dark chocolate. When the fruit fades, there is a long and bitter (forest floor also) finish that lingers on.

Wow, this wine was so complete. The nose had almost everything, the palate was so balanced, both the first attack and the finish. So impressed by this, was expecting it to be a bit more rough, but it remained elegant even though it was so deep and complex. Maybe because of low yields in 2016, the remaining fruit was of extreme quality? Either way, an amazing wine.

  • 2018 Jean-Marc Vincent Santenay 1er Cru Gravières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru

    Double decanted 4h before dinner

    Berry bonanza on the nose!

Big mouthfeel, very juicy. Not as precise as the prior wines, but very enjoyable. A fair bit of oak amongst the abundant fruit. Dry extract on the bitter finish.

Closing

Actually, on this night, the Gravieres was more different from the other Burgundies than the Rabaja. I guess this vintage from Jean Marc Vincent is very gourmand, would be very interesting to compare with the 2019 (which by reports seem more classical).
Mugneret Gibourg justifies their popularity, and even if QPR is a bit of a puzzle in Burgundy, the Ruchottes had that x-factor I seek from a bottle of wine.
All in all, a great showing for all the wines.
