Introduction

The Sunday group gathered for our regular double blind tasting. In this group, we are presented a couple of double blind warm ups before the main flight. The warm ups are discussed & unveiled before moving on to the themed main flight. We spent forty five minutes or so tasting and evaluation the eight wines for the main flight before ranking the wines and then making guesses as to what we were tasting. Wines are ranked 1-8, one point for each place, and then unveiled from last place to first place. After the tasting, dinner is served with the additional wines brought by the group, nonblind. For this tasting we had twelve tasters and the cost, courtesy of a very generous discount from our host, was $50.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Themed flight (8 Notes)

It was immediately clear that we had a flight of Burgundy, the only discussion centered around vintage and whether or not these was a more specific theme within Burgundy.

  • 1990 Edmond Cornu & Fils Corton-Bressandes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Double blind. Ruby red core with a light meniscus. Aromas of caramel and sous bois with sour black cherry overtones. Light body. Sour cherry and red fruit flavors with soft tannin and good acidity. Shows more dark pinot fruit than red as it breathes in the glass but also shows a subtle bouillon note that I find distracting. 87-88 pts.

  • 1990 Georges Lignier et Fils Clos St. Denis 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Double blind. Ruby color with a light meniscus. Aromas of forest floor, red fruit and tobacco with a hint of something meaty/gamey in the background. Dark berry and cherry fruit on the palate with good acidity and a cherry finish. Elegant; bright. Opens in the glass and though it doesn't change, everything just becomes amplified and brighter. Gorgeous.

  • 1990 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Corton 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Double blind. Similar ruby/clear color as the first two. opens with notes of sour cherry and tea leaf. Balanced, with lovely cherry fruit and mineral. This has a plush velvety quality and my initial thought was Volnay. Seemed to shut down in the glass though, losing some of the depth I was hoping for and remained, for lack of a better term, straightforward, with cherry and mineral qualities. Nothing wrong here, just nothing to get excited about either. Would have loved to revisit this later in the evening, but with 12 tasters and sediment, there was none to be had following the tasting. 88+ pts.

  • 1990 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Double blind. Darker color than any other in the flight, this really stands out. Aromas of tree bark and black cherry fruit. Medium-bodied and even has some tannin, but with good underlying acidity as well. Balanced. Flavors of black cherry, tea and rose water. Lingering finish with a nicely ripe pinot fruit quality. Nice ripeness here. Very good, with some power. 90-91 pts.

  • 1990 Hospices de Nuits Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges Cuvée Georges Faiveley Faiveley 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Double blind. Ruby core with a light meniscus. Very pretty upon first pass, with notes of fresh flowers, cherry and mineral. Medium body with good acidity. Cherry and mineral on the palate. My initial thought is Chambolle. Develops a meaty tone with air. Flavors turn a bit darker, almost sour black cherry, with a dried fall leaf quality too. 89-90 pts.

    Group #6, 57 pts.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Double blind. Deep ruby color. Cherry and something a bit deeper in the red fruit family, along with pine and forest floor overtones. Mixed red and black pinot fruit on the palate, with sous bois, iron and cigar accents. Complex and deep; powerful, with a long finish and a slight bit of tannin. Adds a spice note with time. Excellent. 92+ pts.

Double blind. A touch darker than most of the others in the lineup. Aromas of black cherry and perfume with a subtle sour cherry element at the back end. Grand Cru chardonnay from 2009, 2010 and 2011, disgorged in spring 2018 at 5g/L making this, as the back label also indicates, an extra brut (though the front label indicates brut, see both label images). Double decanted off its sediment about three hours, give or take, prior to service. Notes of cherry and florals with a deeper red fruit underneath. Medium-bodied, with a soft texture and flavors of cherry, warm spice and earth. Nice finish; well-received by the group. 90+ pts.

  • NV Opus One Overture 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted about three hours before going back into bottle before leaving for the tasting. It had been about six hours from the time the cork was pulled to being served with dinner. This bottle was a blend of the 2016 and 2017 vintages, comprised 91% cab sauv, 4% petit verdot, 3% merlot & 2% cab franc. Aromas of cassis, black currant, violets and cherry. Very pretty and refined, bordering on elegant. Full-bodied and clearly young, but well-balanced, showing black fruit and violet liqueur qualities. Lingering finish with black fruit and barrel spice elements. 92-93+ pts.

  • 1990 Château d'Yquem 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  • 1979 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Standard bottle, AP 25765113180, courtesy of our host's cold cellar. Much lighter in color than the d'Yquem served alongside, one might guess only 15 years old based solely on appearance if tasting blind. Aromas of diesel and ripe peach, sweet apple and mineral. There's a richness on the palate balanced by the acidity- this is still quite "fresh" and lovely. Peach and more diesel on the palate, with a lengthy finish. More than a few of us preferred this to the Sauternes. 93+ pts. (NG)
