Second Sunday Group: 1990 Burgundies (Neil's): Double blind. Ruby color with a light meniscus. Aromas of forest floor, red fruit and tobacco with a hint of something meaty/gamey in the background. Dark berry and cherry fruit on the palate with good acidity and a cherry finish. Elegant; bright. Opens in the glass and though it doesn't change, everything just becomes amplified and brighter. Gorgeous.
Last of 12, opened 90 minutes, travelled cork, perfect level, browner and not quite up to energy of last bottle in April 16, slight fade to fruit compensated by greater caramelly velvet to the palate, nicely nuanced on nose and palate, even hints of rose hip syrup, old but far from dead. F+ (18)......underlying heft of top vintage and proper GC longevity, more feminine and more to it than previous night's Roche 06..

From Seth, small bottles, blind. Well yup it's Burgundy! There was mustiness - is it corked? This haunted me for a while, and since the wine seemed pretty firm and needed air anyway, I left it alone for some time and drank other things. Coming back to this repeatedly throughout evening, things cleared up and the corky note receded, so it probably was all right. The nose was penetrating and sharp with a strong note of celery seed/celery salt, backed by savory soy/leather, sweet spices, and the faintest note of kirsch at the limits of perception. Pretty. On the palate this started sour but filled out while remaining very firm with emphatic celery salt minerality on the finish. I'm out of my league here so I couldn't guess just which part of the Cote de Nuits this was from. Interesting wine with a strong character, not the most seductive or pleasing but fun to chart over the length of a fine meal.

Classic nose - very perfumed, light and mature strawberry and cherry fruit, lots of sweet and exotic spices, sous bois and autumnal. Definitely a savory aspect (Z says umami and celery seed). Maybe a hint of TCA (Z) Palate is somewhat bitter and clipped which supports the slightly corked theory. Tart strawberry and cherry, spice, some earth, gets very bitter at end - TCA or is the wine just drying out? Tart and earth finish. If this isn't corked then at least this bottle seems to be drying out. Drink up. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5-15/20.
With time the palate is still sour and a little bony, but has more flesh and depth - lots of spice and savory - serious acidity - a little musty note hiding both in the nose and palate. Potent but drying out some, fine tannins still there. The finish shows the spice, the savory and a bit of heat along with almost citric acidity. Zak says this has improved with air and I think I agree - this makes TCA less likely. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5-16/20.
