  • 2018 Atlas Wines Shiraz 429 Degrees Clare Valley

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Reductive, closed...with agitation it still shows that rubbery note. A little strawberry, sweet spice struggles beneath this. With time it starts to open to show more jammy fruit with slight alcohol warmth. I wouldn't pick this as Shiraz based on the nose. Quite strawberry jam on the palate, alcohol warmth, softly textured tannins...Okay but, umm, not really shiraz for me...

  • 2019 The Standish Wine Company The Relic

  • 2018 Torbreck RunRig

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Fruit cake like the Jim Barry but this time joined but plenty of alcohol warmth...sweet blackberry is a little jammy as well. Positively Porty and extracted, raisin water, vanilla...lacks the elegance and balance of the Armagh...

Closing

Two things from this tasting...firstly young Shiraz is preposterously reductive when bottled under screwcap; they really should have done a lot more decanting. Secondly the movement from 'classic' old school big beast shiraz to a more elegant Syrah style is still floundering a little...You can't make cool climate wine from hot climate sites...simply harvesting early is not going to help because the grapes don't get ripe enough...
