Tasted Thursday, February 3, 2022 by rocknroller with 142 views
This was the regular guy's night out tasting, but with a a few that were unavailable, the decision was made to go forth with the gals instead. The theme was to bring something interesting, and think we accomplished that nicely. Thanks to Joe and Khem for coming through with hosting and cooking duties. Everything turned out just great.

2002 Drappier Champagne Réserve de l'Oenothèque 94 Points
France, Champagne
Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Rich nose with red apple, citrus, beeswax, fine chalk. The palate is stony, Meyer lemon, oyster shell, nice weight to the full body, red fruits, chalk, and orange peel. This is a nice wine, drinking well with some depth and complexity. 80% PN and 15% C with 5% PM and the the pinot shines here. Wish I had gone deeper on these. 93+ to 94pts.

1994 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard 96 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark red color with a 5mm transitional margin. PNP, drank a glass plus over 4 hours. Oh baby, is this a nice nose or what. Eucalyptus, savory, subtle funk notes, dried flowers, dried cedar, blackberry, black currants, menthol and a building perfume; ooh lala. The palate is right there with the nose, medium full bodied, earthy, deep cherry, cassis tobacco, menthol, well spiced with dried woodsy notes and gravelly minerality. This is in a great place, but still has tons of life left, it should go another 10-15 years.

2012 Viña Vik Millahue 92 Points
Chile, Rapel Valley, Cachapoal Valley
Very dark red/purple color with a purple hue. PNP, drank a glass over 3 hours plus. CS53%, Carm35%, CF6%, M4%, Syrah2%. Fruit forward, plum and blackberry, muddles spices, nutmeg. The palate is flashy, deep and concentrated, cassis, blackberry liqueur, eucalyptus, with a soft velvety texture. Good acid, but not a lot of tannins lurking there. I don't see these as long agers. 92+ to 93pts.

2001 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Campolongo di Torbe 94 Points
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Very dark red/purple color with a 6mm transitional edge. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. This has a beautiful nose, filled with cedarbox, damp forest floor, red cherry, cassis and black raspberry, dried wood and subtle fig. The palate shows dried cherries, cassis, dried wood spices, dark cocoa bean, plenty of glycerin and a dose of black pepper on the finish. Ripe but not sweet, with nice acids, round fine grain tannins, and a silky finish with no hint of the 16% abv. This is really hitting its stride now, no rush.

2006 Sine Qua Non Marsanne Mr. K The Straw Man 95 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
Deep amber gold color. Drank a glass from 375m. Apricot nose, ripe apple, poached pear, orange marmalade, and more candied tropical notes. The palate is unctuous and rich, orange marmalade, apricot, ripe, velvety, honey, tropical, sweet but not too sweet and fairly tangy, on a long, long finish. This comes off big, but still balanced and contained.
