Introduction

Back to the old hunting ground with the boys...everyone just dragged something interesting/needing to be drunk from their cellar

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2012 Yeringberg Chardonnay

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

Aromas of fresh herbs, lemon, sweet spice, peach, toast. Juicy, citrus over stone fruit, slightly rich with a smidge of bitterness on the finish. Pleasing.

  • 2013 Lake's Folly Chardonnay Hill Block

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin

Reductive struck match, butter, stone fruit, a little green almond. Medium plus intensity acidity, very stone fruit, polished oak, a little butter, mid palate grip, it's a bit linear though still quite primary.

  • 2019 DWC Wines Pinot Gris Field Blend

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula

Green melon, bitter pear, slight alcohol prickle, slight stone fruit...touch of petillance, slight peppery spice, textured mid palate, alcohol warmth, pear skin bitterness on the finish.

  • 1998 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri

    Australia, South Australia

Slight reductive, caramel, meaty, blackberry, plum, slight vanilla, tomato leaf. In the mouth it has jammy black fruit, sweet and peppery spice, thick and chewy tannins. Woof.

  • 1988 Seppelt Cabernet Sauvignon Partalunga

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Leather, earth, red and blackcurrant, dusty, meaty, bloody, bit of cellar stink, roasted red capsicum with time. Acid is sharp, alcohol warmth, drying grippy tannins, leathery and earthy with red and blackcurrant as well as that roasted capsicum. The acidity lends sourness which I find a bit off-putting.

  • 2004 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Jammy red berry - baked red fruits, a little sweet spice, gets more garrigue and meaty with time. Sweetly fruited, softly textured but the fruit is a little dried out and it's a bit tired for me.

  • 2010 Fletcher Barbaresco Recta Pete

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Slight cork taint, red and black plum, pot pourri...cork translate to the palate but is equally diminished...similar flavours, medium plus intensity acidity and tannins the latter chalky , alcohol warmth intrusive on the finish.

  • 2013 S.C. Pannell Grenache

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Slight reductive initially but, with agitation, starts to show jubey and pretty baked strawberry backed by plum, served a smidge too warm which robs the wine of a little balance, but otherwise this is rather nice.

Closing

it was a bit of a funny lunch...I really enjoyed the Yeringberg Chardonnay but everything else didn't really work for me...lovely to catch up with the chaps and I proposed that we do something monthly on the first Sunday of the month going forward.
