UWS a random set of wines

Introduction

There is no theme. Every participant brings one or two bottles fully blind. The wines are split up in whites, reds and sweet wines (if those are brought). No other information. The idea is to go from light bodied and/or old to full bodied and/or young. So randomly someone tells he/she wants to start with the first wine. Then the rest follows when he/she thinks it is a proper moment to pour a wine you brought. And surprisingly enough this system works quite well in most cases. There are no flights. We taste the wines one at a time.

Flight 1 (17 Notes)

  • 2000 Antoine Ogier Hermitage Blanc Les Échalas 81 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Fairly dark yellow. Ripe sweet apples and some minerals in the bouquet. Same on the palate with some bananas. Soft acidity. This is the best I could make of it. Not really a bad wine, but quite dull and boring. For a Hermitage a great disappointment.

  • 2004 Nicolas Joly Savennières Roche aux Moines Clos de la Bergerie 89 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières Roche aux Moines

Fairly dark yellow. Expressive bouquet with some perfume and marzipan. Very tasteful in the mouth; yellow fruits, apple, limestone minerals and marzipan bitterness. Really nice wine. Although still quite young, already very pleasurable.

  • 2008 Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Trocken 89 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Light yellow. Very expressive bouquet with volcanic minerals, fireworks and bread toast. Completely different on the palate with a lot of crisp citrus acidity and tart pineapple. It all probably still has to integrate to become harmonious. For now 89, but there is potential for a few points more. Give it another 3 - 5+? years.

  • 2005 Nikolaihof Riesling Reserve Steiner Hund 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Light yellow. Fresh citrus and yellow fruits in the bouquet. Same on the palate. Not extremely much acidity. A bit fat, some sweetness, limestone minerals and yellow tropical fruits. Quite different from German Riesling, but certainly a good and tasty product.

  • 2000 Prats and Symington Douro Chryseia 89 Points

    Portugal, Douro

Dark blood red with still a purple hue. Pleasant barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate a slightly sweet start and then paprika, black fruits and a firm dose of oak. Some leather as well. Has the typical firmness and bitterness of the Portuguese indigenous grapes. Still quite youthful. Another 3 years of cellaring will not hurt.

  • 2000 Château Cos d'Estournel 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Beautiful bouquet with some pleasant barnyard, cassis, cedar and all the luxurious elements you want in a top Bdx. Same on the palate; a very complete and luxurious wine. The tannin is soft but still very youthful. The wine is starting to show itself, but will definitely improve over the next 5 - 7+ years.

  • 1995 Certan-Giraud 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Mature and beautiful bouquet with a little pleasant barnyard, cassis and beautiful oak. Really great bouquet! In the mouth a soft and sweet start with also a little chocolate. Juicy fruits, good acidity and bitterness. Soft tannin with still a little power for a few more years. Completely ready and at its peak now, but no real hurry.

  • 2002 Chateau Musar 89 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Second time this year I got this wine completely blind and from two different sources. This time the wine showed chocolate in the bouquet and on the palate a lot of sweetness, juicy fruits and a good concentration. Very smooth and very soft tannin and bitterness. Contrary from the previous time I tasted this wine, this bottle was completely ready. Very good indeed, but less impressive than the previous bottle.

  • 1994 Château Rauzan-Ségla 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Another 1994 Bdx which surprises positively this year. Beautiful mature bouquet with a little bit of paprika. Also mature on the palate. Soft acidity and bitterness and melted tannin. No unpleasant acidity. The bouquet is the best part. Ready now and the next few years.

  • 2003 Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Nice and mature bouquet with candy and cherries. Same on the palate. Quite much sweetness and also a lot of fresh acidity and good length. The bouquet is the best part, but also the fresh acidity makes this wine a great pleasure. Ready now and with a future of maybe another year or two although it will probably not improve anymore.

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Very juicy, supple and round. Quite a lot of sweetness. Some laurel as well. Beautiful dose of oak. A little bit drying in the finish. Elegant and lovely wine. Ready now and the next few years.

  • 1994 Vine Cliff Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Beautiful mature bouquet with a lot of different impressions. Very juicy on the palate, a lot of sweetness and also a lot of good and fresh acidity. Soft red as well as black fruits. This wine is not a bit too old yet. Lovely wine!

  • 2001 Bodega Numanthia Toro Numanthia 94 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Toro

Expressive bouquet with a lot of barnyard and smoke. On the palate a lot of ripe and juicy forest fruits and sweetness. Also good acidity and pleasant bitterness. Very full bodied and a long finish. For me personally I was surprised how nicely this wine has evolved and especially that pleasant acidity is showing now. For some of the tasters this wine was too much of everything.

  • 2003 Marion Amarone della Valpolicella 91 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

Popped and poured the bouquet is still a bit locked. On the palate the wine is round and juicy with a lot of sweet concentrated very ripe blackberry juice and some licorice. Firm dose of oak. Certainly a great pleasure from now and the next 3 - 5+ years.

  • 2008 Simonsig Shiraz Cape Winemakers Guild Reserve

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

In fact a lot of everything; primary fruits, mainly raspberry, toast, oak, sweetness and alcohol. Still much too young and I forgot to score the wine, but it must be close to 90 and probably even a bit more.

  • 2001 Bodegas Protos Ribera del Duero Reserva 87 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

See also previous note. Elegant and mature. Although completely ready there still is some power.

  • 1998 Rosemount Estate Syrah Balmoral

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Very tertiary bouquet. On the palate a lot of chocolate. The tannin is completely melted. In the mouth better than in the nose. I don't know the history of this bottle, but the wine was too old for my taste. No score.
