Introduction

the Oak Barrel was offering a tasting of a CndP producer I'd not encountered before so I thought it might be nice to go along. Phil joined me.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2019 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Medium minus intensity aromas, a little floral, more green stone fruit than the apricot in the 2018, almost the implication of astringency on the nose. Fleshy rather than young, medium minus flavours, a little texture, glycerol fatness, a touch of alcohol warmth and a touch of bitterness. Hmm.

  • 2018 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Waxy, honeyed, stone fruit; a little apricot, floral top notes. Juicy, still with breadth but more linear than the 2019, honey, apricot, alcohol more controlled, it's interesting and engaging. Nice.

  • 2019 Domaine La Millière Côtes du Rhône Villages Vieilles Vignes

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages

Slightly spiced, red and black berries, a little baked earth, a little peppery note as well, garrigue. Juicy, spicy, peppery, drying tannic burr persist to join soft berried fruit on the warm finish. Pretty good QPR

  • 2018 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very slightly reductive initially, concentrated, red and black berries, peppery spice, lavender, garrigue, a little alcohol prickle, slight oak notes are controlled. Juicy, fleshy, fresh, savoury, garrigue, plenty of berried fruit a little tar, before talc textured tannic burr comes along, solid. Pleasant

  • 2016 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Rich, ripe concentrated dark hued fruits, baking spice, a little almost black olive. Juicy, fleshy, tannins are a little overbearing for the fruit for me...granular texture but the fruit gets lost beneath this. Also getting a touch of wood glue and brett. Nah.

  • 2016 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bessade

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A little wood glue, fresh oak, concentrated red and black fruit, a little peppery spice, touch of red currant. Juicy, concentrated red berry fruit with a peppery underpin, plenty of tannic grip, a little garrigue. It's a bit big and shouty for me...balanced though.

  • 2015 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bessade

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dense, concentrated, that wood glue note here s well but less to the fore, red berries, savoury, meaty, spiced, a litte pepper with time a little jubey note. Juicy, chewy tannins are tight, big and rather swamp the fruit which is very much a reflection of the nose. Not for me.

Closing

Vintage variation on the whites was fun. The CdR was good QPR. The entry CndP was more my thing than the reserve (which is a common factor for me and CndP)
