Introduction

First Wednesday club...I took two wines from the Loire this week - prepped them both by putting them into a decanter then back into a cleaned bottle with a layer of argon to retain freshness.

Flight 1 (17 Notes)

  • 2011 Seville Estate Chardonnay Reserve

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Served Blind.
Crisp, clean, citrus, a little lemon and lime and a touch of green apple backed by cream. Juicy, a little textured burr on the mid palate, fresh, fruit forward, clean, pretty.
I guessed Petit or generic Chablis 2017

  • 2012 Seville Estate Chardonnay Reserve

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Served Blind.
Floral, citrus, lemon and lime a little sulphur and a little pleach/stone fruit underpin. Medium plus acidity, similar fruit profile with the stone fruit more to the fore, touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.
I guessed Victorian Chardonnay, probably Yarra, 2012

  • 2011 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Served Blind.
Medium minus intensity is meaty and slightly savoury, a little tomato leaf, lime, shows a little more fruit with time in the glass, honey. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little textured, muted fruit, alcohol warmth on the finish, butter, a little bitterness on the finish.
Got a bit confused here – mixed messages from the alcohol and bitterness vs the tomato leaf and lime on the nose. I went with a mis-managed Australian Chardonnay under cork from the early noughties. Oops

  • 2016 Pimpernel Vineyards Chenin Blanc

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Served Blind.
Slight volatile with green apple, a little dusty spice, smells fresh, crisp, slightly saline notes. Petillance prickle in the mouth, medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth, citrus, a little creamy lees work.
By a process of elimination, I got to chenin blanc and figured it was a bit of a natural wine-making venture from Margaret River circa 2018

  • 2012 Weinbau Jutta Ambrositsch Sieveringer Ringelspiel Wiener Gemischter Satz

    Austria, Wien, Wiener Gemischter Satz

    Served Blind.
Clean, crisp, stone fruit, a little cream, green apple. Green apple on the palate as well. Plenty of alcohol warmth, finishes a touch bitter, a bit of residual sugar here as well for me.
    I guessed Barossa Semillon 2012...oops

  • 2020 S.C. Pannell Grenache Old McDonald

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Served Blind.
Pretty and funky red fruited berries, sweet spice, a little volatility. Juicy with medium pus intensity acidity savoury, the fruit slightly darker hued on the palate, talc textured tannins, with tie raspberry jam notes
My initial thoughts were New World Pinot Noir, Victorian, 2016 but that raspberry jam note made me think of Grenache

  • 2020 Yangarra Estate Grenache Hickinbotham Clarendon

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Served Blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas show a little volatility, red and black hued fruit; that jubiness I associate with carbo-crush, a little pretty lifted note as well as a touch of sweet spice. Juicy with medium plus intensity acidity but in balance with the fruit, alcohol warmth on the back palate.
I went to Pinot Noir and thought this might be a slightly overworked Mornington Peninsula wine from 2016

  • 2004 Travaglini Gattinara

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

    Served Blind.
Menthol, mint, red currant, meaty, leather, pencil shavings, a little green underpin. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, fleshy, tangy, plenty of talc textured tannic grip, wetly enjoyable, alcohol warmth on the finish.
I went with Nebbiolo, late 90’s to early 00’s from an unripe vintage in Barbaresco.

  • 2009 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    Served Blind.
Medium plus intensity concentrated ripe red hued fruits, plenty of sweet vanilla oak, coconut. Juicy, savoury, plenty if ripe fruit, medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins, alcohol warmth, oak notes are here but more integrated and dialled down
I guessed Rioja, 2008, Riserva. I was surprised by what it was as I thought it a little too ‘clean’ for a Tondonia

  • 2017 Bodegas Valduero Ribera del Duero Una Cepa

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    Served Blind.
Concentrated savoury red and black hued fruits; plums, sweet spice on the nose. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, chalky tannins which prove quite tight & mineral to the detriment of the fruit unfortunately.
I went with Priorat, 2018, grenache blend

  • 2015 Frederic Mabileau Bourgueil Racines

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil

    Served Blind.
Volatility, red fruits, violet, pencil shavings, Bretty notes. Wetly juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, fleshy red and black currant, chalky tannins, Bretty on the palate but not distressingly so. Okay.
    Recognised this as mine

  • 2010 Clarendon Hills Grenache Clarendon

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon

    Served Blind.
Slight volatile, red berry and red currant, sweet spice, slight alcohol prickle, a little eucalyptus here as well. Sourly juicy red fruit, a little residual sugar, alcohol lends peppery spice, there is a bit of a cough medicine note here as well. Meh.
    I guessed Barossa, Grenache, 2012

  • 2021 Nick Spencer Medium Dry Red

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Gundagai

    Served Blind.
Pretty, slightly jubey, carbonic maceration, sweet spice, a little peppery note. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, jubey dark fruits, alcohol on the finish, talc textured tannins persist long, there is, despite the alcohol, a sense of fleshy freshness here as well.
I went with a new style Barossa Shiraz based blend. 2020

  • 2005 Sandhurst Ridge Shiraz Reserve Sandhurst Ridge Winery

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Bendigo

    Served Blind.
Ripe red over. Black berry, leather, sweet s pie, a little American oak in underpin – vanilla, caramel, a little blackcurrant, slight herbaceous notes here as well. Medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth, red and blackcurrant and berry, talc textured tannins.
I guessed Shiraz Cabernet blend from Victoria, probably Yarra, around the early noughties

Leather, slight red currant, sweet spice, green capsicum, a little raisin note. Medium plus intensity acidity polished oak, red and black berry, alcohol warmth on the finish, drying, talc textured tannins.
I guessed Bordeaux blend Cab dominant Coonawarra early noughties

  • 2005 St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Served Blind.
Sour red berries and currant, leather, sweet spice, black pepper, raisins. Medium plus intensity acidity, sour, slightly chalky tannins, black pepper, black hued fruits are a little dried out, plenty of alcohol warmth. Not for me.
I guessed 1990’s bad vintage Victorian Shiraz (shame on me)

  • 1992 Château de Fesles Bonnezeaux

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux

    Served Blind.
Oxidised bruised apple notes, a little lemon marmalade, apricot, marzipan, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, fleshy, juicy, a little texture, initially a touch of spirituous, oxidised bruised apple here as well as a touch of burnt caramel. Probably past it’s best
    I knew this was mine
