Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2019 Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Wine 1 of 6. A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, and 2% Counoise & Muscardin. 15.5% ABV. Glass staining dark ruby colour. Ripe red and dark fruit, ripe raspberry, black currant, blackberry, dark chocolate, complex herbal and spice notes, and some smoke, with good acidity in the context of the wine's ripeness, ripe, very round tannin, and superb length. Finishes lightly dry (not drying). Very supple. The alcohol is well contained. The quality of the tannin stands out.

  • 2018 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wine 2 of 6. A blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier. Aged in casks for 36 months, 50% new. 14% ABV. Expressive nose. Floral notes, red and dark fruit, cherry, raspberry, blackberry, light dark chocolate, spices and light vanilla, with medium-level acidity, medium-fine tannin, and very good length. The finish is lightly tannic and dry, but in a positive way. The discrete oak is well integrated. Start drinking from 2027.

  • 2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wine 3 of 6. A blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Aged in new oak casks for 38 months. 14% ABV. Dark and red fruit, milk chocolate, espresso, coconut, gingerbread, spices, black pepper, and intense vanilla, with medium-minus acidity, ripe tannin, and very good length. Oak bitter finish. Very ripe. And very oaky. Too much oak for my liking. Will need a lot of time to integrate the oak. Hold. 90(+)(?) for now.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2016 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wine 4 of 6. A blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier. Aged in new oak casks for 40 months. 13.5% ABV. Floral notes, violet, dark and red fruit, dark cherry, blackberry, black raspberry, coffee, chocolate, spices, and vanilla, with good acidity, ripe, round tannin, and superb length. Lingers for quite some time. The finish is oak-driven, but the oak is in balance with the generous fruit. Darker than the La Turque. Very young, but very intriguing already. That said, the 2016 La Mouline is outshone by the 2016 La Turque and La Landonne today. 94(+) for now.

  • 2016 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wine 5 of 6. A blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Aged in new oak casks for 40 months. 13.5% ABV. Almost seems a little restrained on the nose after the expressive La Mouline. Red and black fruit, cherry, raspberry effervescent powder, light chocolate, light coffee, spices, and black pepper, with good acidity, fine tannin, and superb length. Pure and precise. More refined than the La Mouline. A great wine. Should age beautifully. 95(+) for now.

  • 2016 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wine 6 of 6. 100% Syrah. Aged in new oak casks for 40 months. 13.5% ABV. Very dark ruby colour. Restrained nose, more restrained than the La Turque, and in particular more restrained than the La Mouline. Dark fruit, coffee, dark chocolate, truffle, light gamy notes, and spices, with good acidity, ultra-fine, high-quality tannin, and incredible length. A little restrained, and very sophisticated. Great concentration, and great balance despite of its youth. You can actually drink the 2016 La Landonne wine now, even if the best is yet to come… Bravo! 96(+) for now.
