Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Starts out very fragrant and floral, with creamy lemon fruit, unusually delicate for a Bâtard, then shuts down a bit, to reopen to more buttery and honeyed flavours, gaining a bit of flesh whilst retaining its delicate and floral character, with gentle bitters on the fragrant finish.

  • 2007 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Very different from the Leflaive Bâtard 2001 which preceded it. Powerful and concentrated, big and bold, very constant over the whole evening, a textural wine, firm structure with delicately resinous oak, masculine but also quite monolithic, starts to open up after three hours, long and slightly nutty finish.

  • 2012 Maison Ilan Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Looking back at past tasting notes for this wine, there were some serious cork issues apparently. This bottle was fine however. Very natural in style, pure and direct, clearly whole bunch, minimal intervention, bright and fresh, youthful structure but evolved, noticeable carbon dioxide, very mild tannins, not my style of Burgundy, but the quality is there. Even though I think that producing wines in Burgundy in a way which largely eliminates terroir expression is wasteful.

  • 2017 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines Vieille Vigne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Beautiful purity and precision, whole cluster, very gently spicy oak, stunning glossy blue fruit, concentrated but elegant, beautifully balanced and fresh, papery tannins, a wine of posture and poise, with exceptional finesse for this Premier Cru from the Côte Saint-Jacques.
